webfact
Don says UN happy with Thailand's human rights defence By The Nation Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai BANGKOK: -- Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said on Thursday that the UN Human Rights Committee has expressed satisfaction at Thailand's efforts to address and tackle human rights issues. Thailand’s delegation attended the 119th session of the United Nations International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in Geneva on Monday and Tuesday to submit the country’s report on human rights. Led by Charnchao Chaiyanukij, the permanent secretary of the Justice Ministry, the military regime's delegation gave verbal reports and responded to inquiries which focused on 11 key issues relating to the junta's ruling since it took power in 2014. They largely focused on the political situation, including the new constitution, the enforcement of the special powers under Article 44 of the interim Charter, the restriction on freedom of expression, rights to assemble, the trials of civilians in military court and the lese majeste law. Other issues were social based, including labour rights, as well as progress in the investigation following the disappearance of prominent Muslim lawyer Somchai Neelapaijit and Karen activist Pholachi "Billy" Rakchongcharoen. Don said the Thai delegation spent about three hours each day responding to questions. The exchanges were academic based, he said. Ahmad Amin Fathalla, committee vice-chairperson, in closing remarks on Tuesday, thanked the delegation for the lengthy discussion, but remarked that some of the questions were still be answered, including freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and child labour. Just1Voice
I wonder what report he is reading, because the ones I read showed anything BUT "happiness". In fact, they were pretty disappointed and disgusted with Thailand for their FAILURE of human rights.
rkidlad
Yeap, of course. I read other sources that said the complete opposite, but who cares anyway? UN won't do anything. Very sad state of affairs.

ThaiBob
Let Mr. Don explain this away. Briggsy
The Thai Minister has taken on the dual roles of UN spokesperson and expert summariser of UN reports. No conflict of interest there, of course.

JAG
Are any of you surprised at this? Anyone at all?Personally I am surprised, nay amazed, that the UN were so ignorant of the unique situation here that they failed to remark warmly on the "roadmap", and the selfless herculean efforts to follow it.I am sure that will be remedied soon... darksidedog
Don Pramudwinai and Don Trump. Two best people in the world at twisting things to become the antithesis of what they really are. I suspect the UN were stunned by the drivel and obfuscation they had to listen to, much the same as half the world is stunned listening to Mr. Trumps wobblers. Eligius
The following is the modus operandi of Thai officials, speaking on behalf of other governments or even the UN: The UN says to Thailand: Your human rights record is shocking and appalling. Your blatant contempt for your people is heinous. Your constant lies are unsupportable. Would you care to explain any of this? Thank you. Thai Minister to the Thai public: 'The UN has thanked Thailand in connection with our human rights record and expressed its gratitude for what we are doing.' And no one with any power can call these liars out on their constant, unremitting and pathological lies!
Krataiboy
Whoever wrote the headline should have their Press card torn up. The story below it does not say the UN is "happy" about human rights in Thailand, but only that a UN investigative committee had "expressed satisfaction" that Thailand was making efforts to clean up its woeful record. In fact, as stated in the report, the UN are still awaiting responses to questions relating to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly and child labour. One understands why, in the present repressive climate, newspapers are reluctant to openly criticise the self-appointed government. Journalists may have to bend, but sure as hell they don't have to suck.
