Tourism operators urged to seek certification for global promotion
By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Department of Tourism, under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, is encouraging tourism-related operators to quickly apply for standard quality assessment.

This means their businesses can be eligible to be awarded the certification on April 3 and be included in a government-endorsed list for worldwide customers.

Wanasiri Morakul, director general of the Department of Tourism, said the tourism-related businesses must meet four criteria under the Thailand Tourism Standard: legitimacy, hygiene, fair prices and safety.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Tanasak Patimapragorn will give the certification to the tourism-related businesses that have passed the standard quality assessment on April 3.

There are five tourism-related businesses eligible for quality evaluation: the goods and services category including souvenir and jewellery businesses, massage operators, spa salons, and amusement parks; travel agencies; restaurants; tour coaches and accommodations.

“The standard quality criteria in each business category are different,” said Wanasiri. “Travel agencies, for example, must be legally registered, possess all necessary licences, and must never have received customer complaints.”

Six days notice? And, then the Department of Tourism is going to certify all of these thousands of travel-related businesses? Does the Dept. of Tourism have a staff of thousands to conduct all these inspections? Will these certificates just be bought and paid for? Is this just another meaningless exercise pretending to care about foreign tourists?
