Crime Man Arrested for Brutal Knife Attack on Nephew After Fabricated Story Unravels

A 40-year-old man has confessed to viciously attacking his nephew with a knife, leaving him severely injured, after initially claiming the victim had accidentally fallen onto the weapon during a scuffle. The incident occurred on 22 May, in the village of Nong Bua Khok, Lam Plai Mat district, Buriram province. Police and emergency responders were called to the scene, where they discovered 20-year-old Mr. Satang lying in a pool of blood in front of a house. He had sustained a deep, gaping abdominal wound approximately 30 centimetres long and 8 centimetres wide, exposing parts of his intestines and lungs. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition. The suspect, Mr. Mongkol, the victim’s uncle, was not initially present at the scene. His 58-year-old mother, Mrs. Saiyon, initially claimed that Mr. Satang had attacked Mongkol with a sword but had accidentally fallen onto it during the altercation, causing his own injuries. Later, Mr. Mongkol returned to the scene on a motorbike, telling police a similar story: that Mr. Satang had requested to borrow his motorcycle and when refused, returned with a knife to attack him. Mongkol claimed he defended himself and that the victim had again fallen and accidentally injured himself. However, police were unconvinced by the inconsistent and implausible accounts. A search of the house uncovered a large kitchen knife, allegedly used in the attack. Investigators also found a fertiliser sack buried behind the house containing bloodstained clothing. Mrs. Saiyon admitted to burying the clothes but claimed she did not know their significance. Following further interrogation, Mr. Mongkol eventually confessed to deliberately attacking his nephew with the knife. He has been taken into custody and is being held at Thamenchai Police Station while formal charges are prepared. This operation aimed to prevent underage entry, drug activity, and firearm possession, thereby promoting a safer environment for visitors. Led by Chonburi officials, including Provincial Defence Chief Lt. Col. Cholathit Leyanon and Bang Lamung District Officer Nathapop Yomjinda, the joint task force teamed up with Pattaya City Police under the leadership of Police Lt. Col. Suchat Dusadee. They carried out inspections at four venues, checking licences, employee records, and IDs of patrons. Drug tests on employees were also conducted. The inspections found no illegal activities, underage patrons, or drug presence, reflecting the strict compliance of these establishments with government regulations. Lt. Col. Cholathit highlighted that this operation aligns with the policy of Chonburi Governor Thawatchai Sritong. The collaborative efforts between provincial and district authorities and the Pattaya City Police aim to address social issues, particularly drug abuse, and ensure a secure tourism experience. Mae Phlu Waterfall, previously promoted as a must-see destination in Uttaradit province, now lies in a ghostly, derelict condition, with decaying facilities and overgrown paths rendering it unfit for public use. On 23 May, a group of domestic tourists who travelled to Mae Phlu Waterfall to admire its famed rainy season beauty were shocked to find the site completely neglected. Reporters who followed up on the complaint confirmed the dismal state of the area. Located in Moo 4, Mae Phlu subdistrict, the site requires visitors to walk 500 metres from the main car park to reach the waterfall. Along this path, overgrown weeds and dilapidated infrastructure paint a stark contrast to the idyllic images seen in promotional materials. Visitor benches lie broken, shops and rest areas are unsafe due to collapsing roofs and ceilings and the public toilets emit a foul odour, suggesting a prolonged lack of maintenance. Once a vibrant location, the waterfall area featured tiered concrete formations designed to mimic a natural cascade, blending harmoniously with the surrounding environment. It attracted both locals and tourists, who came to relax, swim and support small businesses offering food, drinks and souvenirs. Mae Phlu was also a source of community income and served as a valuable water resource during both the dry and rainy seasons. Despite this, the site has evidently suffered from long-term neglect by the authorities. Lap Lae district chief Mr Surawut Janngam, who recently assumed his position two months ago, admitted he had visited the site and found the conditions consistent with tourist complaints. He acknowledged the lack of public access and said the province’s governor has issued a directive to rehabilitate the area. Mr Surawut explained that while many of the structures were built over a decade ago using provincial development funds, the waterfall itself lies within the jurisdiction of the Royal Forest Department. This has created administrative hurdles in implementing repairs. However, plans are now being discussed to officially designate the area as forest land for educational and recreational use, which would allow Mae Phlu Subdistrict Administrative Organisation to allocate a dedicated budget for its restoration. Local officials and community leaders hope to revitalise the site, turning it once more into a scenic, safe and economically valuable destination for both visitors and residents.
