chowny77
Recently I was asked if I was married and I said "Yes". I was then asked," why do I have to go out of the country every 3 months". Well, this was a Thai person asking me of course and they have no clue about the BS we have to endure if we do not meet their requirements. So this got me thinking, am I really married, after all if it was the shoe on the other foot she would be entitled to citizenship after a time plus no hassle with yearly extenstion/visa runs. I also know it is much easier if the foreigner is female to marry, but still why the big difference. So I am I really married? What happens if I can not fulfill the immigration requirements? I get deported? What happens to my wife? At the moment I am all good but for some people this is a real question, even if you are legally married to a Thai your life hangs by a thread and it should not be like this, male or female. I am bored of the BS and doing border runs. No wonder so many foreign men including myself turn to beer. I am getting off the beer and plan to retrain myself for the real world....... it looks grim!
Popular Post Maestro
Ideally, the bride's parents should give their daughter a dowry of minimum 400k Baht with the condition that she put it in a fixed deposit account in her husband's name, for him to meet immigration's financial requirements for the one-year extensions of stay.

Popular Post Get Real
A yearly extension of stay makes you not have to leave the country every 90 days. That suddenly not makes your Thai friend so stupid. Then it suddenly comes back to you. As everybody say in business and in real life. You must have a plan! That is what you should think about before you put youself in a position that you might eventually not handle very well. My dear Watson, the choice is yours! Turn to beer or live you life with dignity. What more can I say?
arithai12
OP, why border runs? About the rest, yes we know that this is not a country which encourages foreigners to settle down as an integral part of the society no matter how much they contribute. Always good to have a plan B (where B is not for beer).

The last time I left the country was to get a single entry non-o visa. I then applied for a one year extension stay based upon marriage of the 90 day entry from it. Now on my 9th consecutive extension of stay.

Either you choose to do so, or you don't meet the requirements. Not always the case, we enjoy the 3 or 4 nights somewhere every 3 months just for the change of scenery etc. Sometimes an out/in if work or whatever gets in the way. Having said that this will probably be the last multi and I'll change to extension when it runs out next year. Then it's just a re-entry permit if needed. Visas are not extended.
lopburi3
1. Marriage is the same process for male or female. 2. Extension of stay is dependent on male. 3. For a foreign male there is a financial requirement for extension of stay. 4. Stays of 90 days or less do not require such financials but only non immigrant visas, which can be issued on basis of registered marriage.

Mine is very very simple I choose to do so it suits my lifestyle I can forget about all the BS described on here weekly with regards to extend based on marriage. Op get of the beer won't do you any good in the long run been there done that. But doing the extension is a one time each year experience (not weekly) so really a lot less effort than having to plan and make border runs every 90 days or less (and I did that for many years). Don't base your decision on horror stories here - in the vast majority of cases the process is quick and easy and then you have freedom to take vacations when and if you want rather than it being a requirement. I say weekly as every week a new story appears on here or other Thailand forums about the sheer stupidity of immigration and the extra process which they decide to use on a particular day the intrusive pictures required what next a movie of you and your Mrs making out!. I don't have to plan anything with regards to 90 day runs when there due I have two options and I choose the option that suits at the time. That's one of the main reasons I retired to enjoy life and plan nothing. Having a non o is not a burden it does not tie me down if I want a holiday 30 days into the 90 we do not hassle no grief. As I say suits me. Edited April 25, 2017 by jeab1980

So why did you come here and why did you marry someone here? If you could manage to scrape together Baht 400,000 in the bank or have a provable income of Baht 40,000 a month, there would be no need for border runs. If you can't manage that, it was probably irresponsible on your part to take on marriage in the first place. Even in your own country, if you couldn't muster an income of US$ 1150 a month you would hardly be the catch that every woman dreams of. And now you're wondering aloud if you're really married because you're bored with it all and have realized that maybe you didn't think things through very well.

As to the photographs or anything else you consider intrusive or overly strict, such things generally come about in response to farang who have abused or gamed the system. Many have pretended to be married just so they can stay in Thailand on the cheap. That's the same reason things have become stricter with visa exempt entries, with student visas and extensions and with serial use of tourist visas, people have abused these to finagle long stays in Thailand. For a very long time, Thai immigrations was considered pretty laid-back about most things and then through the "sheer stupidity" of those who took advantage of that, things became tougher.

Popular Post rkidlad
First time me and my missus went to immigration to do my visa extension, I had to tell my missus to bite her tongue. I told her that immigration are the same the world over. Just smile and answer their silly questions. When i showed my bank book and letter, etc, my missus asked why I have to support her. How my missus has her own money and doesn't need to be taken care of like a child. The immigration officer just nodded. Then my missus asks why we have to have pictures of us in our bedroom. It made her feel uncomfortable and didn't prove anything. Again, I had to tell my missus to say nothing and smile. The immigtation officer didn't say much and just flicked through paperwork. Imm officer asked why we don't have kids. I grabbed my missus' leg and said "We will have kids very soon" (complete lie) and imm officer smiled and said very good. At the end, the imm officer explained to my missus that they want the photos and proof of money, etc, to make sure she's not marrying a bad man. It's all for my missus' protection. My missus explained that it's up to her who she marries. Good, bad, rich or poor. That's her business. Thankfully, I got my extension already. The whole process isn't only just annoying and infuriating for us 'farangs'. It can be even more annoying and infuriating for our spouses who can be treated like their children.

NoshowJones
Yes, I agree with the OP wholeheartedly, westerners married to a Thai girl should not have to put up with all this hoop jumping, even the marriage extensions and all the hassle involved and the 90 day reporting is outrageous.
