Booed in Berlin for praising father, IvankaTrump says fine-tuning role

BERLIN (Reuters) - Ivanka Trump was booed in Berlin on Tuesday when she described her father Donald as a "tremendous champion of supporting families" and said she was still fine-tuning her role as first daughter and informal White House adviser.

Trump, 35, who is seen as an increasingly important influence on her father, told a women's summit organised by the Group of 20 major economies in the German capital that she wanted to use her influence to help empower women.

Asked whether she represented the president, the American people or her business as first daughter, she replied: "Well certainly not the latter, and I am rather unfamiliar with this role ... it has been a little under 100 days but it has just been a remarkable and incredible journey."

Ivanka Trump's appointment as an adviser, with access to classified information, was highly unusual for the daughter of a president. Seeking to allay ethics concerns, she said last month she would serve in the White House in an unpaid, informal role.

In Berlin, she discussed support for women entrepreneurs with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde among others.

"I'm listening, I'm learning, I'm defining the ways in which I think that I'll be able to have impact," she told the panel discussion.

"I'm seeking the counsel .. . of informed and thoughtful women and men and I'm really striving to think about how best to empower women in the economy, both domestically and across the globe."

But the audience was unsympathetic when she called her father a "tremendous champion of supporting families and enabling them to thrive", with the moderator moving the discussion on amid a chorus of boos.

PROUD FATHER

Donald Trump found himself at the centre of a furious controversy during the presidential campaign when a video surfaced in which he boasted about grabbing women's genitals.

Asked whether some of the attitudes expressed by her father raised questions over his commitment to empowering women, Ivanka Trump said her experience and that of thousands of women who had worked for him showed he believed in women's potential.

"I grew up in a house where there were no barriers to what I could accomplish ... there was no difference for me and my brothers and I think as a business leader you saw that and as a president you'll absolutely see that," she said.

During the Berlin discussion, Donald Trump tweeted a link to a Financial Times editorial Ivanka co-authored with World Bank President Jim Yong Kim on investment in women and said he was "proud" of his daughter for "her leadership on these important issues".

Ivanka Trump's visit has received a mixed response in German media. The newspaper Berliner Zeitung, which has described her as "the president's whisperer", said German officials would "certainly be hoping that the president's daughter will convey a positive image of Germany to her father".

Another paper, Tagesspiegel, was more sniffy about her credentials, opining that Trump's dependence on family members - also including her husband Jared Kushner, a chief presidential adviser - was like a "vote of no confidence" in everyone else he was surrounded by.

She has clearly inherited from her father the trait of saying things that are completely untrue, while expecting people to accept them.  While Americans may happily swallow BS, she just learned that foreign audiences will react to such rubbish.

Why is Thai Visa, Bangkok Post etc so down on Trump. He's not your president. Could you imagine  US Newspapers putting down the General Prayut every day, day after day? Ridiculous, give the guy a chance to do his job. I voted for someone else but they lost,  fair and square.

The article is from Reuters not TV or the Bangkok Post. The article is also not about Donald Trump it is about Ivanka Trump. Are you suggesting no foreign news should be published in newspapers?

You can put a scented artificial flower on a pile of dung, but it doesn't make the dung smell good.

Getting booed, is the #1 reason Trump didn't do what all presidents in the past 100 years have done; throw out the first pitch at a baseball game.  He knew he would get roundly booed if he appeared in public.  Instead, he only appears in tightly controlled situations (and seldom) where there are regular people.   Trump also skipped the Correspondents' Dinner for similar reasons.

As with any of the "royal" POTUS family, Ivanka represents any way for them to make money by any means necessary whether through blatant promotion or obvious "pay to play" schemes. In no way shape or form does she represent or even care for the American people. It is all about lining their pockets. Any side benefit to the American people is just random fallout.

American presidents have influence.  They can also unleash the most powerful arsenal of weapons the world has ever known.  I happen to be a US citizen, but even if not, I'd be gravely concerned about the dufus in the WH and the just-as-dangerous ding dongs he surrounds himself with, Ivanka included.

Why do I dis Ivanka, you may ask?  Ok, she's pretty and shapely, that's undeniable.  No, the 2 primary reasons I'm spooked by Ivanka in the WH are:

A. She's an enabler.  Similar to Pol Pot's or Mussolini's top lieutenants; anyone who is close to and encourages a tyrant is an enabler.

B. She wouldn't have been given a security clearance to be on the WH grounds, if her daddy wasn't in the top spot.  Google her involvements/investments with Kazakstani mafia & Iranian secret service (formerly known as SAVAK), if you like.

Easy for you to say. You were very anti Hillary Clinton and very strongly in favor of policies supported by Trump.

Ivanka comes with no useful skill sets for the role she purports to play and accomplished nothing in Trump's first 100 days to alter or moderate his political objectives.

She needs to fine-tune herself out of the White House.

I knew this would get em going......anyhow, whether its from whatever news source, too much time these days is spent staring at computer screens hiding in rooms, and making big comments. I am as guilty as the rest. But if Clinton would have won what would have happened then? OK go at it folks! Funny nobody makes these comments in person having coffee.

I'd love to know what your olfactory credentials are….any perfumes you wear regularly?

The Donald is like an Oud fragrance….slightly animalic (alpha male) but polarising. Those

who love it do so with a passion and those who don't just hate it.

Oud is not for anyone…even I wear it sparingly.

OTOH, what is Ivanka supposed to do….start trashing her old man in public?

Only an ungrateful spawn would do that. Merkel has invited over just to suss out how to get

to the donald because she has no clue. Why would the donald, a dynamic businessman, get along with

a socialist physics professor who does everything ploddingly slow (obama would because thats his style too).

The question is what is Ivanka doing in the governmental arena at all?

She is told, and she believes the jive, that she is a moderating influence on her dad re; his draconian policy proposals.  Yet, out of 25 policy decisions made by her dad, only one was influenced by Ivanka.  That's one more than Tiffany (who is probably the wiser daughter).

Bannon is the primary policy driver in the Oval Office.

Kushner has all the intellectual acuity of a mannequin in a shop window.  Both he and his wife's purpose is to show pretty faces for public consumption.  Trump is 96% about image (1% substance, 1% convictions, 1% intelligence, 1% knowledge).  Both Ivanka's and her husband's job description is to look smart, dress smart, nod their heads knowingly and chuckle fawningly at whatever the Dufus in Chief says.

Yeah, but trump is such a horror show, even someone as vacuous as Ivanka is seen as a hopeful check on the nasty craziness of trump. Dark times indeed!

Total banana republic family/business corruption stuff. Any respect the USA had in the world before trump was elected (which admittedly was already battered) is now totally down the crapper.

Cross Cultural Communication skills are key. Trump appears to have none. Typical American business style. Korean, German, American business and cultural communications are poles apart

Lol.  Like anybody except Berliners cares what Berliners think about anything.  'Wonder how much beer & sausage had to be doled out to pay for this anyway.

Here's a little something about the Chinese company that has the exclusive contract to make Ivanka's clothing:

Ivanka Trump’s Clothing Line Is Made in a Chinese Factory Where Workers Earn $1 an Hour

“Workers at a factory in China used by the company that makes clothing for Ivanka Trump’s fashion line and other brands worked nearly 60 hours a week to earn wages of little more than $62 a week, according to a factory audit released Monday,” the Post reports. “The factory’s 80 workers knit clothes for the contractor, G-III Apparel Group, which has held the exclusive license to make the Ivanka Trump brand’s $158 dresses, $79 blouses and other clothes since 2012.”

The October 2016 inspection of the G-III factory—carried out by an industry self-monitoring collective, the Fair Labor Association, which includes companies like Nike—found two-dozen violations of international labor standards as determined by the United Nations’ International Labor Organization."
