webfact
Bangkok roads flooded following heavy overnight rains By The Nation Krungthep Kreeta Road at 7.39am by @Surasak Phromphong BANGKOK: -- Heavy rains throughout Wednesday night and Thursday morning have caused flooding on many Bangkok roads, leading to severe traffic congestion during the morning rush hours. The Bangkok Flood Prevention Centre issued a statement, warning motorists to avoid the following eight roads: 1. Ratchadaphisek Road from the Ratchayothin intersection to Lat Phrao Road 2. Ngam Wong Wan Road at Pongphet Market and Soi Shinnakhet 3. Lat Phrao Road from Pradit Manoontham Road to Soi Lat Phrao 97 4. Pattanakarn Road from the Klong Tan intersection to Klong Lao 5. Ramkhamhaeng Road in front of the Bang Kapi electricity office 6. Srinakharin Road near Wat Sri-Iam 7. Srinakharin Road at the Krungthep Kreetha intersection 8. Sukhumvit Road under BTS Baring station. On some roads waterlogging was as high as 40 centimetres. The floods prompted Sompong Wiengkaew, director of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Sewerage and Drainage Department, to inspect some roads at 4.40am. He said many roads were flooded late Wednesday night but the waters had receded by Thursday morning while his department officials were racing against time to drain the water. The water level subsided on the Ngam Wong Wan-Pong Phet Road and vehicles could use two right lanes while the left lanes on both sides were still flooded. He said the road in front of the Criminal Court was still inundated. His department reported at 4.45am that Klong Chao Khun Sing in Wang Thong Lang district had the heaviest rainfall – 156.5 millimetres. That's 10% of the yearly amount of rain all in one day. Not strange that there are floodings.

Jonathan Fairfield
Even motorcycles stranded as Bangkok comes to a virtual standstill Image: JS100 Some of the worst traffic seen in years hit Bangkok after heavy overnight rain left the city paralyzed. In northern Bangkok the main artery of Ratchadapisek was at a standstill coming inbound all the way from Viphavadee Rangsit. Even motorcyclists had abandoned their vehicles and were watching the mayhem from elevated positions as floodwaters swirled. Many motorists were seen leaving their vehicles to film the gridlock that was as bad at 9am as it had been earlier in the morning. Smiling police in galoshes did their best to get some movement going at the Lat Prao intersection but the traffic was only going in one direction - outbound. -- © Copyright Thai Visa News 2017-05-

The water would eventually ends up in canals outside the dome and then back in. You need to enclose Bangkok in a globe to make it flood proof, and not a dome. (appy both meaning) You are joking right. You must have read the title of this thread and know it is about serious traffic problems. well if you did not know pedestrians are traffic too. There is flooding vehicle traffic is at a stand still. perhaps pedestrian foot paths cannot be used. At times like this people adapt. I think any where in the world it would be allowed to have pedestrian traffic on road between stopped vehicle traffic.Jaywalking is the least of peoples worries at times like this.. Toshiba66
Parts of Srinakharin Road still flooded at 3pm. Lucky it didn't keep raining or it would be a bigger mess. There is very little runoff with the water dropping about a foot all day.

Or most likely the center is higher. 3. This is a silly question
Moti24
There were recommendations 10 years ago that with the rising sea level and the fact the land under Bangkok was sinking, a wall should be built around Bangkok sooner rather than later. But, as usual, "Mai bpen rai, we'll do it when we need to". Well, I think that time has already passed, so I would get your skates on if I were you. The average Monthly rain fall in May is 220mm. In comparison London's rain fall for May is 46mm / Maximum monthly rain fall is November with 64mm There were floods on the streets of Hong Kong due to exceptionally high rainfall. When a city has 71% of its monthly average rainfall fall in one night (a handful of hours) - there really isn't much anyone can do. The system is completely overwhelmed. I can't see fault with anyone for last nights floods. Bangkok's flood defenses are already pretty good and well designed, IF they are maintained. But these protect the surge from the north and the sea. As such if / when a colossal storm as last nights hits Bangkok the only thing which could protect the city from flooding is a huge umbrella !...
