PATTAYA: -- Police were called to Soi Bua Khao in the early hours of Thursday morning after an eighty year old monk attacked a member of the public.

A man called Witiwat, 31, said he was minding his own business having a late night drink by the road when he saw the old monk tramping the streets.

Concerned about him he asked what he was up to being out at 3am.

Unprovoked the monk - known as Phra Surin - grabbed Witiwat by the throat and started swearing at him.

Rather than exacerbate the situation and bearing in mind that his was a member of the clergy, Witiwat called Pattaya police with Sorasak Pinthong responding.

Sorasak said that Phra Surin was rambling and incoherent, reported Siamchon News.

Officer Sorasak then offered to take him back to his temple but he begged not to be taken there.

He then surprised both the police and the locals by "wai-ing" and pleading not to be taken to his temple.

Monks do not normally "wai" anyone.

Still officer Sorasak thought it best to take him home to the temple. On arrival at Wat Thamma Samakhee the abbot Ajarn Somboon was asked if Phra Surin belonged there.

He confirmed that he did and that he was a troubled monk.

At which point Phra Surin started swearing at his abbot.

Officer Sorasak decided that it was best to take Phra Surin to his quarters and put him to bed and let the abbot sort it all out in the morning.

It was just another night for Pattaya police.

So in all of his years being a monk thought him nothing? all this meditations,

praying, seeking enlightenment and wisdom  brought him to this kind of

behavior? and he's till a monk?....

I think its more to do with his age. Years can do things to the mind.  I rember my grandmother losing it in her later years walking the streets at night abusing people and that was never the lady we always knew

At 80 the monk may well suffer from dementia, and/or other related conditions. Unfortunately the temples as well as the Thai community as a whole do not have the facilities to deal with these situations. This is a public health issue that will grow in Thailand as more people live longer due to better nutrition and health services.
