Two men killed in Oregon train stabbings that follow anti-Muslim rant

(Reuters) - A man fatally stabbed two passengers aboard a Portland, Oregon, commuter train after they tried to stop him from harassing a pair of apparent Muslim women, police said on Saturday.

The assailant was identified by police as Jeremy Joseph Christian of Portland, a 35-year-old convicted felon. He was arrested soon after the Friday afternoon attack.

The incident unfolded hours before the start of Ramadan, Islam's holy month, when most of the world's 1.6 billion Muslims observe a daily religious fast.

It began when Christian started shouting ethnic and religious slurs, apparently directing them at two young women on the train, one of whom wore a Muslim head covering, the Portland Police Department said in a statement.

Three men who intervened were stabbed. One of them died at the scene while another died at a hospital, and the third was treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The two women left the train before officers arrived and detectives want to speak with them, police said.

Christian was booked into jail on two counts of aggravated murder and charges of attempted murder, intimidation and being a felon in possession of a restricted weapon. He was ordered held without bail.

Police declined to release details of Christian's prior criminal history. But the Oregonian newspaper reported he had been convicted of robbery, kidnapping and weapon charges, citing court records. It was not immediately clear if he had obtained an attorney.

In a statement responding to Friday's attack, the Council on American-Islamic Relations blamed an increase in anti-Muslim incidents in the United States in part on President Donald Trump's focus on militant Islamist groups and anti-immigrant rhetoric.

The administration has said that while it strongly opposes Islamist militants, it has no quarrel with Islam.

A Facebook page that appears to belong to Christian mentions "Jihadi Muslims" among people he disliked. The image on the page matches the photo of Christian released by police after the suspect's arrest.

"If Donald Trump is the Next Hitler then I am joining his SS to put an end to Monotheist Question," a rambling post on Jan. 23 reads.

The page includes images of Christian raising his right hand at a so-called "Free Speech" protest in Portland last month.

Neanderthal..

Stabs 3 men trying to protect the women from harassment. Which we are taught is noble and a good thing.

Kills 2 of them. Worthy of death penalty

It's often the case that those who seek to "defend" Christian values by threatening and attacking others are themselves low-life felons. Almost invariably when it comes to the extreme violence in this tragic case.

RIP to the two people who tried to do the right thing and stop this low life moron. Two ladies sat on a train, minding their own business should not be viewed by anyone as a target for vitriol. This is what happens though, when unintelligent people hear stupid statements from politicians and the press that vilifies every Muslim.

It doesn't take a great deal of intelligence to understand the difference between a militant Islamist and an everyday Muslim, but clearly it was too hard for this sicko.

Same as many of the lone wolf attackers supposedly defending the name of Islam. In reality, most were just low-life misfits, many with past run-ins with the law and often mental issues as well. Instead of going 'postal' as we used to call it (losing it and desiring to take out others in the process) they attach a false 'cause' to their cowardly wanton acts and many of us in turn blame all in the same religion/ culture. We aren't blaming all white people or all Christians in this case (of course) nor should we blame all Muslims in the reverse.

As for this low-life, he obviously felt empowered and emboldened by Trump's past anti-muslim rhetoric (according to his Facebook). Same as many others are now emboldened, plus with Trump's anti-Mexican (anti-fill in the blank) one fully expects similar incidents to continue.

Heck, even your Asian looking wife or girlfriend could be targeted....

At least teleprompter-Trump was able to dial down his rhetoric somewhat on his recent trip but unfortunately for many the tone has already been set.

'Often' - really?

This man is a lone wolf, known to the police, with mental health issues.

How dare you try to point fingers at a group of people because of this mans behavior.

Tragedy those two were killed and one injured, but proud of my fellow Portlanders for standing up for the ladies.  I like to think that step in attitude is part of Oregon culture (nut cases are too, but they are in minority). Like the marine that stopped terrorist on train in Europe couple years back

And you can take all that back.

Turns out the perp hated Trump and Hillary. He was a Bernie Sansers supporter.

Blows your 'blame Trump' argument out of the water.

I don't really care where you find this utter non sense, but do suggest find a site for news that has a least slight toe in reality... http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2017/05/portland_suspect_in_2_slayings.html#incart_big-photo

Or as you yourself stated in a post regarding a Muslim lone-wolf with mental health issues who was known to the police:

Quote

Dagnabitt: 'Nobody is born hating anybody. All Jihadi's are brainwashed by somebody. The fact that this guy was easy to brainwash is rather irrelevant. The CAUSE is the brainwashing. The radical Imams that preach hatred and are allowed to do so because to stop them would be politically incorrect.'

Valid point(s) you made in that sad case and well stated. In this case, the President of the United States  has preached harmful and some would say hateful or hate-inspiring rhetoric over and over again, ultimately empowering and emboldening this guy and doubtless many others. Especially the President but also anyone in positions of power and influence (Iman's and Baptist Preachers included) should not be defacto inciting followers. But apparently it's ok if you're a Trump supporter because to ask the President to please stop using harmful rhetoric (which absolutely is inciting guys like this) would be 'politically incorrect'. Yes, nobody is born hating anybody but along the way some use hate to gain power and influence unfortunately.

Actually,  Oregon is well known for its entrenched racism that exists even today.

TH

That’s because racism has been entrenched in Oregon, maybe more than any state in the north, for nearly two centuries. When the state entered the union in 1859, for example, Oregon explicitly forbade black people from living in its borders, the only state to do so.

without seeing all the facts - did he maybe pro-catively kill the 'interveners' - because of their ethnic background too?

His own facebook page...

Doesn't excuse Trump from inciting and emboldening many by using hateful rhetoric. This particular guy was all over the place, also quoting to join Trump's SS. There's multitudes of documented cases of Trump inspired hate. You 'might' (?) feel different if your wife or perhaps Asian looking kids were set upon by Trump inspired haters as has been documented happening to several others.

9/11 came a long, long time before Trump, my friend.

He may be your boogeyman but you will need to do a lot better than that to prove cause.

Plenty more abound. Could be done to your own Asian looking wife or kids.... Point being, the tone set by Trump / the highest office in the land absolutely has emboldened these types of acts. One cannot (pardon the term) white-wash this fact.

The fact is that Donald Trump spewed hateful speech during his election run and  after his election- America has seen a surge of attacks against Muslims; Immigrants and people of color.  Donald Trump needs to speak up forcefully and tell the American people that he does not support these type of attacks and condemn them.  His silence is acquiescence. He tweets constantly and shoots off his mouth about everything except condemning this aberrant behavior. Trump is a poor example to Americans and the World.

I have a question...when you "think", does it hurt? I mean, is it like a migraine? Because all the crap you've got stored in your cranium has got to be putting some intense pressure on the inside of your skull. You go off unhinged at sujoop for "pointing fingers at a group of people" and yet you have no problem pointing your finger at all Muslims. Here's a suggestion...try going back and rereading the post. At no point did sujoop ever point a finger at anyone other than the man who committed this atrocity. He (sujoop) clearly stated that he was a lone wolf who had attached himself to a "cause" in order to justify his irrational behavior and intentions. And by the way...he wasn't a Bernie supporter. He was an anti-establishment supporter and felt that Sanders and Stein were from outside the establishment, a point made clear by his rant on his FB page (he clearly stated that his "support" for Sanders was in spite of Sanders being a Jew, meaning he didn't like him and only "supported" him because he thought Sanders would buck the system).

If you're upset because you think that sujoop is labeling all Trump supporters in with this person, you are way off base. Point to the sentence where he does so.

However, as he hasn't, allow me the pleasure. This man is just one more manifestation of the overwhelming tide of racism, bigotry, xenophobia, white supremacy, misogyny, and gay bashing that has been unleashed since Trump's election, fostered by Trump's incessant pandering to the poorly educated bigots who comprise the majority of his base. Where is Trump's impassioned rejection of the support he receives from white supremacists, from the KKK, from the Council of Conservative Citizens (a racist organization), and from the myriad other racist/xenophobic groups who turned out the cheer him on? Where is his impassioned plea for his supporters to exercise restraint when dealing with Muslims? Where are his impassioned arguments against racism, bigotry, discrimination, and every other form of evil now running amok and being perpetrated against innocent non-whites in the U. S.? The Southern Poverty Law Center reports well over 1,000 incidents of hate-related crimes since Trump's election, a dramatic increase. Where are the orange one's impassioned arguments against these activities? Why has he never once come out in any dramatic fashion against these people? Actually, the answer to that one is quite simple...they're his base. And you, with your finger pointing at all Muslims, fit right in.

How did this turn into a political issue??

We have a stupid man killing two others who defended two moslem women from his initial verbal abuse.

It wasn't 'political' - he hated all moslems!

He has no defense and needs to be locked up for the rest of his life, but its probably time to ban all religious head-coverings and the like in christian countries.

The alleged killer supports white supremacy ideology, so aligned to a violent poltically motivated froup. The level of killing and other violence associated with the extreme right in the US is under-reported, Oh and I assume you mean banning all religious head gear, no matter the relgion, which I assume would be contrary to Consiitutional gurantees, so good luck with that idea.

From the OP.

But the Oregonian newspaper reported he had been convicted of robbery, kidnapping and weapon charges, citing court records.

This guy is still walking around in public!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Something is clearly rotten with the American justice system. He's 35, not 75. How long did he serve for kidnapping ( not long enough )?

It's political because trump's presidency ( and I loath the bastard ) is being used by nut jobs to commit hate crimes.

I didn't think I was at all subtle in stating "its probably time to ban all religious head-coverings and the like in christian countries."

But you're right - its never going to happen.

Couldn't agree more!

I'd vaguely hoped that trump was looking towards his legacy, and may therefore turn out to be a good president....  Its looking increasingly unlikely - but nonetheless I could do without pretty much every thread turning into a 'hate trump' thread .

This thread is about a man who hated moslems and killed two people as a result of his hatred.
