English teacher "wais" and says sorry for attacking a primary school student - but now faces immigration enquiry.

The foreign teacher at the center of an online furor after he attacked a P5 student during an English class has wai-ed the child and his mother in apology.

The school director - who at first tried to keep it quite until the news blew up on social media - has downplayed the incident as a "misunderstanding".

But Daily News reported that while the teacher was legally in Thailand there are irregularities about his teaching qualifications.

The story broke on Facebook after the boy at the school in Lang Suan, Chumporn told his mother what had happened in English class. He claimed that the teacher had come up to him and grabbed his throat before pushing him into a table then kicking him to the floor.

He had several bruises and was taken to hospital, said Daily News.

The boy said it happened because some of the students were talking in class.

The mother named "Suay" went to see the director who fobbed her off with an excuse saying he would look into it.

Nothing happened until the story erupted online then the school sent a representative to the mother to try and iron things out.

This resulted in the teacher - who was not named - wai-ing and shaking the hands of both mother and son saying he was sorry for what he had done.

School director Suchart meesombat said it was all "a misunderstanding".

He said that the teacher only wanted the children to learn but chose the wrong way to go about it. He added that the year group leader had spoken to the children about talking loudly in class.

And he said that the teacher concerned had been warned about his future behavior.

However, the teacher may not have a future. Daily News quoted a local immigration policeman Bunkaew Aepphakwen as saying that following the incident the teacher's documents and credentials had been checked.

While it was found that he is legally in Thailand a check on his teaching credentials showed irregularities and a possible prosecution was likely.

Daily News did not report on the exact details of these claims.

They keep telling foreigners to learn the "Thai Way" to behave. Now that someone has followed that advice and is acting in the traditional Thai manner for treating students, they want to kick him out of the country. Go figure.

It is pathetic and pointless when a Thai person does the wai/apology nonsense, even more so with this numpty.

Prosecution followed by deportation should solve this incident.

That sort of behaviour is totally unacceptable and unbecoming of a teacher.  In Thailand people might look the other way but if this was in the guy's home country he would be in deep pooh pooh.  I don't have kids but if I did I would not want a "teacher" like this anywhere near them.  This fellow simply does not seem to have the temperament to be a teacher.  If he has not done so yet, he should resign.

I worked in a government school about 12 years ago, the Thai teachers were always smacking the kids. This guy lost his cool because he thinks being a teacher in a thai government school is something to be taken seriously. You pay peanuts you get monkeys, I'd also be surprised if any foreign teachers in these thai schools have degrees in English or education (no one did when I was doing it), why would anyone spend 4 years studying and work for 35,000 thb per month? I think we can all agree that sort of money just isn't worth it, not to mention the fact that the thai teachers don't like you because the reason you're there is because their English is worse than tarts.

Thailand, the hub of misunderstandings... But in all seriousness i hope this so called teacher gets hammered for this.

If you can't control your class, try any new methods, and if that fails move on to pastures new... Not difficult really..

Checking "his qualifications". Understandable if it is a $4000 per month job in Korea or China. But for the pathetic amount of money teachers get paid here it hardly seems worth the ridiculous expectations and hoops they need to jump through. How many "qualifications" does one need for the wonderful priveledge of working full time (plus a large chunk of evenings making lesson plans) for less than $900 per month? Total farce. Would never want to be an English teacher here.

Whether this teacher was being paid $500 or $4,000 a month is irrelevant - he accepted the job with the conditions offered by the contract.  That contract (and Thai law) doesn't give him the right to assault his students.

I would suggest that if he cannot control his temper, then he should not be working as a teacher, especially a teacher of young teenagers, who by human nature will test his patience.

Also, Songkran was in April :)

Don't forget the school Principal's who tried to cover it up, he/she should be demoted to the lowest possible level, i.e. as a fresh teacher just starting out

This is not about a teachers salary, its about abuse, people have choices, if you don't like the salary, change careers, simple really.

As a foreigner you cannot, I repeat, cannot touch the kids. There was only one time I did and it was only because a high school student had grabbed me as I passed his desk and tried to pull me off balance, luckily I outweighed him by a bit and was able to pivot and pull him up out of his seat to face me....the look on his face was priceless but in spite of what I wanted to do, I set him down gracefully in his seat and smoothed his shirt so the other kids actually had a chuckle. Situation defused....not to say there were not times I wanted to throttle some of them. But you cannot touch the kids....you have to keep it under control because they will test you everyday.

If he knew his documents were not valid I suppose he is just daft to abuse a student.  Please deal with him according to the law.

MOE is very strict with Intl Schools now.  You need original documents from university when applying for teacher license plus a letter from the university sent directly to MOE confirming degrees (amongst many many other documents).  It is a real pain in the keister to get that done but understandable.  I would imagine for local schools for the amount they can pay teachers their requirements are much less strict, or they just wouldn't have any teachers.

The picture with his snidey look to the camera got my back up, they haven't forgiven him they've been asked to do that picture probably for "public relations".

:)

Just the fact that he was not wearing nice clothes and a tie is an insult to the parents in a situation like this. He is soon to be on a flight home is my guess.

Yes, and a great mistake that was.

Many people need some physical encouragement to make them obey the rules, both here and in the west. Unfortunately they no longer get it whilst growing up, and that's why adults are so badly behaved now.

Why didn't this 'farang' say he was 'old school'. It worked for that 'Thai' teacher who was whacking his kids. Oh, I see.

Fire him and blacklist him from teaching ever again. Also, do this to the Thai teachers who do the same thing daily.

Maybe you havn't read the full article but he is not in trouble for using the " Thai way" to handle this. He is in trouble with Immigration for teaching using what they suspect are false documents.

No sorry they do not, thats an excuse used by those who have lost the art of conversation. You get a better reaction out of kids if you treat them right, than banging their head up the wall as later in life they grow up angry and one day you are at the fuel garage filling up with gas and in walks that still angry young man and bangs your head up the wall. I know I was that angry young lad who got his head banged up the wall and his hair pulled out for running to the toilet as needed to go. teacher well lets say my crash hat must have hurt as he did not get up for awhile and the guys at the garage who saw it said he attack me, so it was him who got into more trouble.

treat kids right and they will treat you right.
