BANGKOK, 5 June 2017 (NNT) – The Prime Minister wants all 77 provinces to establish their own Geographical Indication (GI) products so as to attract international visitors, saying he is eyeing two particular fruits produced in Bangkok for GI distinction.

Prime Minister’s Office Spokesperson Lt Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd explained today that the government is working on having each of the nation’s provinces boast a GI product to add value to their locally made goods and to foster marketing efforts on the global stage. Each province has been asked to promote at least one locally made product for GI distinction and has been advised to locate such products in communities that do not yet have a tourism draw card.

He noted GI registration also provides a kind of intellectual property protection. Currently, Thailand is home to 75 GI products spread across 70 provinces.

The goods include various types of rice, cuisine, fruits, handicrafts and even industrial items. The government is at present promoting oranges from Bang Mod and lychees from Bang Khun Thien in Bangkok for GI registration.

The seven provinces that don't yet have any GI goods are Sakaeo, Singburi, Samut Sakhon, Satun, Kanchanaburi, Ranong and Krabi.

To promote GI products, the government is setting up GI Corners in two popular department stores with plans to expand to up to 100, by year’s end. It will also be working with GI product developers to help them meet the needs of consumers and assisting in marketing to target groups.

glycemic index. I thought GI was already taken?

The focus should be on the benefits say these foods bring.

Durian could be turned into a qualitative champagne say for a region. Most of the foods although delectable to the Thai palate, is usually as far as it goes. Having lived in Thailand, I can't recall any specific foods that I would say have me coming back for more. But that's my palate. Pushing it up hill for election purpose.

Thought he was promoting galvanised iron!

I thought it was Gastro-Intestinal tract products. Silly me! Gov't house produces loads of sh*t on their own already on a daily. Enough for all 77 provinces.
