Thailand keen to foster correct understanding of situations in restive south

Thammarat Thadaphrom

BANGKOK, 10th June 2017 (NNT) – The Thai government is working to ensure the global community’s correct understanding of the current situations in the violence-torn south.

Gen Udomdej Sitabutr, the deputy defense minister, called a meeting this week with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Labor to discuss issues related to the restive south. Gen Udomdej went over a plan to foster a correct understanding of the southern unrest among international organizations including human rights agencies.

The government has been carrying out development projects in the southernmost provinces and seeking cooperation from Muslim dominated communities to attain higher levels of efficiency in its operations.

The deputy minister then thanked each representative for their willingness to protect the people and the country’s sovereignty.

Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and parts of Songkhla have been fighting insurgent groups since 2004.

And what exactly is considered a "correct understanding"?

The little generals version of events is the only one that is 'correct'

Surely this is clear and who could doubt the wisdom of Thailand's self elected and benevolent leaders....

It’s simple. Correct understanding is the result of correct thought. If one thinks correctly then one will understand correctly.

What's to understand?  In the south islamic terrorists are running rings around the Thai "security" forces and terrorizing the public.  Seems pretty straightforward to me.

Whizbang do you you know anything about historical facts about the south? The south never belonged to Thailand it was en is still a predominant Islamic region it was annexed by Thailand which tried for decades to Thailandish and Buddha-isch that part of nowadays Greater Thailand.

The message is clear.

The "global community", being the rest of the world doesn't have a clue what's been going on down there since 2004.

Only Thailand knows and will ram their opinion down the throat of anyone who disagrees with them. So typical of military governments!

The correct understanding of the current situation is in the "eye of the beholder."

The Junta - the Media is sending the wrong message:

BRN - Real Problems to peace talks:

  • “BRN members said the junta was only concerned with its own legacy and did not want to be seen as the people who gave away Patani”
  • “ …. the current junta wanted to treat the dialogue process as a domestic issue as much as possible.”
  • “ …. the frontline Cabinet dealing, which is led by Deputy Defence Minister Udomdej Saithibutr, needs to be broadened so that diverse voices from the region can be represented.” 2017-05-23 http://www.nationmultimedia.com/news/national/30315994
  • “Setting this issue as a national agenda is an important matter, because if it is not a national agenda, there will be no continuity in the dialogue,” 2015-08-28 http://www.khaosodenglish.com/politics/2015/08/27/1440673999/
  • “The BRN says Thai security agencies' old attitudes and standard operating procedures haven't changed. The culture of impunity among the officials makes it difficult for them to take anything from Bangkok seriously” 2015-06-2 http://www.pressreader.com/thailand/the-nation/20150627/282441347738718
  • “Unfortunately, Bangkok never had a policy regarding the southern conflict. It has an attitude, sometimes confusing it with good intention, but never a meaningful policy that addressed the issue of historical mistrust and grievances of the Malays of Patani and how the state and the Muslims there could overcome these differences.” 2015-09-1 http://www.nationmultimedia.com/news/opinion/today_editorial/30268680
  • “In the statement purported to be released by the BRN, the separatist group said the government’s rejection of its proposed five conditions showed that the government had never accepted that the root cause of the unrest in the far South was the ‘occupation and colonization’ of the region by Bangkok.” 2015-10-13 http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/isoc-doubts-brns-latest-statement/
