I made the trip into the city to get my hands on both the iPad air 2 and at the same time the new 2017 iPad 9,7 inch , I found many non official Apple re sellers that had the IPad Air 2 , but they would not un box one unless I was going to buy it , which is understandable , so I never actually managed to get my hands on an iPad Air 2. What I did manage to get my hands on and physically try was the 2017 iPad 9.7 inch and the iPad Pro 9.7 inch along with the Apple iPad Pro 10.5 inch .

I must admit knowing nothing about iPads , but the iPad Pro 9.7 inch in my hands felt well ..... just fantastic , slim and light weight , and was on a promotion offer of 19,000 Baht ( wifi 32GB ) , but for value for money the 2017 iPad 9.7 ( wifi 32GB ) at around 12,500 Baht is hard to beat . Although I did not manage to get my hands on an iPad Air 2 ,( on sale at 13,400 Baht – WiFi 32G ) ) I think if I had it would have felt just as nice in my hand as the iPad Pro 9.7 .

So for VFM 2017 iPad 9.7 ( wifi 32GB ) seems the winner , but some how it did not have the feel and wow factor of the iPad Pro 9.7 inch .

I'm still on the fence :crying:

Advantages of the iPad Pro are better display, integrated keyboard and a pen.

Disadvantages of the iPad Pro are price, rapid obsolescence, and not being a 100% replacement for a laptop.

There's lots of speculation about how the iPad Pro will undergo dramatic changes next year.

Probably because it weighs less. I would trade all of my iPads in for the 2017 9.7 in a heartbeat. Processor, touch ID etc etc.

The Air 2 and 9.7" Pro are exactly the same size/weight but neither of them are part of the current iPad line up anymore. If you must have this style then you'd have to get the Pro for longevity.

Other than that go for the 2017 9.7" or even the 10.5" Pro!!

If it were my choice I would opt for the 10.5 iPad Pro just because it offers the latest, comes with 4 GB of RAM -to just 2 GB of the 9.7, and introduces the 120Hz ProMotion display -one you have to experience to really appreciate. Plus it will get at least 2 more years of support than the 9.7 iPad/Pro.
Otherwise, the 2017 iPad (iPad 5) is the clear winner with its 12,500 price tag (cos for me, what actually the 9.7 Pro has over the 9.7 non Pro, is the better sound quality with its 4 speakers).

^ I agree with most of that apart from that iPads should easily go for 3 years not 2 years. I used a mini 2 flawlessly for 3 years and the person I gave it to absolutely loves it and it's still going strong. My cousin has had an older iPad 2 since it was released and is still quite happy with it for media consumption and email tasks. That must be 5 years old now, easily.

Just purchased the good lady wife an iPad Pro 10.5" and have to say it really is a bit of kit.

First thing that I liked on firing it up was signing in with her iPhone which made setting it up extremely quick and easy.

I'm glad I didn't purchase the 12.9" as it's just too big for her requirements and know she would have moaned about it.

I should also add that I purchased the 29W USB-C Power Adapter and USB-C to Lightning Cable for the fast charging facility.  Apple should really include this in the box but alas not.  £84 quid, ouch.  But full charge takes about 2 hours 15 minutes rather than over 5 hours with the supplied charger.

I like to keep up as I can sell my wife's pristine iPad Air 2 for nearly as much as I paid for it, I kid you not.

The Pro is bordering on laptop quality.

My iPad Mini 2 Cellular has been the best little electronic device I have.  4 years old and still doing great.

But, with new needs it's time for a new device.

That will be the iPad Pro and for my needs it will be the 12.9" (w/attachable keypad and maybe the pen too), as soon as the newer model is released whenever in 2018.
I've thought over the cellular vs WiFi model.  I'm about 95% sure I'll go with just WiFi this time.

I've never bought Apple Care for the little devices, sure did use it with the MBP.

I have numerous Apple devices of various flavours and I have never bought Apple Care. No issues having problems fixed. Almost all without charge.

Apple fixed my five year old G5 FOC and also recently my 2011 iMac needed a new video card. Free on a computer that is six years old...

I am on my third iPad, which I bought two years ago. The first two were WiFi only, but I decided to go for the cellular model for this one, and I am glad I did. I use my iPad when out and about a lot, so I find the cellular really useful. You can get a data plan with 5GB for 400 baht/month or so. Also, only the cellular iPad comes with a GPS chip, so even if you don't have a cellular connection (when you are out of Thailand), you can still use GPS apps such as offline maps. I use maps.me for that.

Good point about the GPS.

There is a map app I used A LOT on my mini when traveling in Vietnam and Malaysia without a SIM.

The reason I mention maybe not getting the cellular version, is when I had the Mini (cellular) I almost never used my iPhone 4S.

Now, I have an iPhone 7 Plus and it (seems to) fills that need for cellular connection apps/activity.  AND, I have since dropped the cellar data package on the mini for about 5 months now and really don't miss it too much. AND... the 12.9 iPad will be a giant unwieldy beast unlike the mini which I plan to keep until it dies.

On the Mini I can always fire up the cellular part if need be.

Lastly, I can always do the HotSpot with the phone if I need to.

The most important reason for me to get cellular iPads is the GPS function. I use the cellular function in Thailand as I don't have anything else but in Japan I'm only using the wifi connection for data however using Maps.me I have GPS navigation all the time.
