U.S. military plane crashes in Mississippi, at least 5 reported dead

(Reuters) - A U.S. military plane crashed in rural Mississippi on Monday evening, a state emergency official said, and media there reported that at least five people were killed.

No official details were immediately available on the crash in northern Mississippi's LeFlore County, about 100 miles (160 km) north of Jackson, the state capital.

Captain Sarah Burns, a spokeswoman for the Marine Corps, said a U.S. Marines KC-130 Hercules transport aircraft "experienced a mishap."

However, the Clarion-Ledger newspaper, citing LeFlore County Sheriff Ricky Banks, reported that at least five of the nine people believed to have been aboard the plane were killed.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant described the incident as a "tragedy" in a statement on Facebook but provided no further details.

Images posted online by news organizations showed the crumpled wreckage of a plane engulfed in flames in a field surrounded by tall vegetation, with a large plume of smoke in the sky above the crash site.

The National Transportation Safety Board did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

U.S. military plane crashes in Mississippi; 16 dead

(Reuters) - At least 16 people were killed when a U.S. military plane crashed in rural Mississippi on Monday evening, a regional emergency management official said.

No official details were immediately available on the circumstances of the crash in northern Mississippi's LeFlore County, about 100 miles (160 km) north of Jackson, the state capital.

Captain Sarah Burns, a spokeswoman for the Marine Corps, said only that a U.S. Marines KC-130 Hercules transport aircraft had "experienced a mishap," with news media initially reporting five confirmed deaths.

Several hours later, Fred Randle, LeFlore County director of emergency management, told Reuters that at least 16 people had perished. Randle gave no further details of the incident.

The incident was a "tragedy", Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant said in a statement on social media site Facebook, but provided no details.

Less than 5% of the 2500 odd production hulls have crashed though quite a few have been shot down over the production run from 1954 to the present which is a good record over a 63 year production run.

BTW who are "they" relying on old 4 bladers?

The newer C130-H comes in at about $30,xxx,xxx a time or around 1,000,xxx,xxx thb a time should you want to buy one.

#7109 in that link of mine is a 'J' yes - but what was the report you saw?

I am still sifting, and so far, it seems it was a KC130T according to the C-130 database

Still trying for the actual Serial, but not expecting it to be revealed until all relatives have been advised, and the Enquiry gets underway proper

Hearing on the news that the FBI is involved in the investigation.  'Reportedly carrying ammo and that there was apparently a mid-flight explosion, but was still a little surprised at FBI involvement unless there's some suggestion of sabotage.  'Doubt very much that the age of the C-130 had absolutely anything at all to do with it.
