Popular Post Tsm12345
Hey, I got a German passport. I've had 4 tourist visas and one visa on arrival in it. I left to Laos 3 days ago with 2 days overstay (national holiday) to get my ED visa. My ED visa was for a Thai language school. Returned to Bangkok today. Immi officer pulled me out and I got interviewed. I was asked to show 20k THB and I only had 8k on me but I told them I could show them my banking account on phone or go to any ATM and withdraw the money. Guy was powertripping for whatever reason and didn't let me. Said he doesn't trust me and told me I'll go home. I'm in the detention cell right now on 3g. Already been here for a good 8 hours and it sucks. Coackroaches everywhere no blankets no pillows. It's a good time. Now. I need to come back asap. I got a condo in Thong Lo with all my belongings. I got my friends here and my training. I want to live and stay here. What's my best go at coming back? Get a new passport and pray? Go through another airport (today was Suvurnabhumi)? Try to sign up for next semester at Uni? I just need to sort this out asap and get back here. So any help is appreciated. Or if anyone has contacts that could help me please PM. Cheers guys
Popular Post Crossy
This is the second post of this nature in two days, worrying. Did you speak to a supervisor? Popular Post texanaust
You might want to check if someone called 'Kohphanganlover' is still around as he had plans to appeal his entry denial. He might be further along in the process now and could give you some advice...
Tsm12345
Yeah just saw it. Reading it right now. What's the plan moving forward? I'm 24 years old if I didn't mention that earlier and it's of any use. I still don't get how they declined entry despite me having signed up and paid for language school and having all the neccessary papers + a valid ED visa. It's insane.
Tsm12345
Haha I just realized Kophangan lover is probably the other white guy in detention right now. He's sleeping though.

The "standard" reason for denial is not having the required 20,000 Baht. In the past it has rarely been requested, but it seems to becoming more used. That said, (IIRC) these are the first cases of visa holders being denied for this reason, it's usually those attempting entry on visa exemptions. Please do keep us informed, it may be too late for you two guys but it may help others. Good luck.

A new passport won't be of any help, they can search your movements on multiple criteria, you'd need to change name and DOB too... To stay and live here, you need a proper visa, on solid grounds; i.e not tourist visas or exemption, ED become fragile because it has been over (ab)used. I would NOT stay in Thailand if I wasn't married to a Thai, with two kids, so I stick to the "married" visa. But clearly, the climate is "Anti-Farang" so they will more and more give visa to Farang money only, with some exception.. You are lucky young man Germany is a great country. Popular Post lamyai3
Yes, it's clear the official reason for denying you entry was not carrying the sufficient funds, it's anyone's guess though if they'd have looked for another reason if you had produced the 20k. The other thread contains suggestions about appealing the ruling, though I'd have thought if it's allowed to fly out to a neighbouring country (and then attempt to come back in via a land border) this would be cheaper and less unpleasant. First thing though is I would contact the school director - if your papers are all in order I'd have thought they'd want to bend over backwards to help you out of this situation. Best of luck to you.
BuckBee
Indeed things are tightening up and those without the $ aren't welcome, thailand is all about the $, if you ain't got it they can't get it so you ain't welcome . Airports are hassle and those with lot of visa entries will be interviewed and if goes badly you'll be sat in detention room lol .... Thailand always been anti farang, just currently they want most of our influence out and only money in . la la land good years are long gone and unlikely ever return .
rhodie
Does it change things if you get the 20,000 and produce? If you can't get to an ATM maybe a friend could bring the money to you.
Popular Post Somtamnication
Strange that they denied the OP the chance to go to the atm and show the funds. Very worrisome indeed.

jspill
I'd try to ask to fly back to Laos if I can, some other guys managed to fly to Laos instead of their home country, and it may be possible since you flew from there. It varies though. Then come in via land border, which people with a longer visa history than you have done with no issues. If you're sent to Germany, fly to Malaysia and come in via land border to Hat Yai then domestic flight to BKK. Either way have 20k baht cash on you, although at land borders they're less likely to ask, and even if you had it today maybe it wouldn't have made a difference. The guy in the other thread had 25k, it didn't help. Edited July 14, 2017 by jspill

So you're require to TRAVEL with $20k+ They can ask you to see 20k baht or same in another currency like USD or yen. It not the most unreasonable thing in the world but some people have made a good point about this making people robbery targets at land crossings. Of course a lot of people are not devoting hours each week to reading visa news forums and simply dont know about the weird rule of needing to have 20000 baht in hand if asked.

Is there even a cash requirement on an ED visa? I don't think there is. Usually you just have to show proof of funds to the issung embassy or consulate.

Popular Post LannaGuy
Must be a real **** sitting their and I feel for ya. This is really bad news that Thailand is changing so much and in so many ways. If I had known all this 10 years ago I probably would not be here now. They need to make it ultra clear no 20k no entry but to kick you out rather than a warning for next time shows a real lack of goodwill in LOS

There've been reports of the IOs saying 'it's too late now', just signing the papers (in Thai) for deportation and at that point you just wait in the detention room for the next flight, nothing you can do. This is a very good point and, to be fair, if you don't follow their rules precisely you are always in danger of having a problem. I am nitpicking and ultra pedantic about these things. Still bad luck and a warning would have sufficed I would have thought. Hope this get's out and others make sure the 20k is in their pockets. Yes and I am never going to regret moving to the Philippines. The only thing I miss is the beautiful food but I still have a house in Thailand and go for holidays when it suits me and never have a problem with immigration, get a visa in Penang, too easy. I have noticed the anti farang in some of the people as well as the authorities, worrying signs.
