Phuket suspends parasailing following fatal accident to decipher new safety measures

PHUKET, 14 July 2017 (NN) – Phuket province has stepped up measures after an Australian man was killed in a fatal parasailing accident on Kata Beach, temporarily ordering a stop to the activity while better safety precautions are sought.

Phuket Governor Noraphat Plodthong remarked on the death of a 71 year old Australian man who fell while parasailing off Kata Beach and ultimately died from his injuries, saying that a meeting has been held to discuss the incident but definite measures have yet to be decided. A stumbling block of the meeting was that parasailing is considered a sport under law and does not require the same licensing as activities deemed solely for leisure.

The boat involved in the incident was properly registered to the Phuket Marine Office but the jurisdiction of the agency does not extend to parasailing. The office has been asked to coordinate with relevant agencies and to suspend parasailing in Phuket for the time being. Members of the industry have been asked to join in a discussion to figure out better safety measures.

Here we go again, another knee jerk reaction.

Safety measures should have already been in place and properly implemented,  not thinking about it now, because a poor man is dead.

My oh my!...terrible news!...extra tea money would now be required to re-open the venture and nothing will really change!??:partytime2:

"Members of the industry have been asked to join in a discussion to figure out better safety measures"

Advice to those involved in the meeting , remember 2 words FAIL SAFE

Since when has parasailing been an "Industry"

Let's keep them permanently shut down.......................... Too bad a permanent shutdown won't happen, too much cash floating around. Noise pollution, swimmers being told they can't swim in certain locations, smelly fuel, who cares, baht is king! More accidents waiting to happen unfortunately.

It will all be open again in no time. Got to make it look like the authorities are concerned about tourists, but we all know that money talks, so new procedures will be " agreed"  which will be exactly how it all was before. Standard bullcrap.

Fair suck of the sav, it's a start, remember the jet-ski scams, haven't heard anymore scams there.

PHUKET:-- The Governor of Phuket today called on parasail operators in Phuket to refrain from providing parasail rides at Phuket beaches until they all attend a mandatory safety review on Monday (July 17).

“We really do not have authority by law to enforce a ban, but we have asked that we do this together,” Phuket Governor Norraphat Plodthong told The Phuket News after a meeting of relevant officials and more than 20 parasail operators at a meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall today (July 14).

“I want them to learn how to safely provide such services by undergoing training by Royal Army Region 4 on Monday,” he said.

Really? I mean, really?

Yup, it will be suspended until a fatter envelope changes hands.

Authority = responsibility. It was already stated that the operation was not properly licensed,  So the 100,000 baht question is who issues the licenses & is responsible  (stand by for the rush in the opposite direction)?

Thailand's safety measures: How many deaths will it take til they know, that too many people have died?

I was up early in Pattaya the morning after I had arrived. I was down to Soi 7 for breakfast about

7:45 am. The restaurant I wanted to eat at was not open yet. I took my scooter down to beach road.

Out in the bay I counted 28 parasails in the air. If my memory is correct I think that was low season

as well. So parasailing may not be an "industry" but it is big business with money to be made.

I was truly shocked at how busy it was.

Here, greed trumps everything: friendship; business; law and order; safety; life, death, etc!

I'll pass on a para-sail ride thanks.

using 44 would finally make sense. Shut down this (scum) industry

So... "a full safety review" has devolved into an optional one day safety course run by the army.... all good then.

If they have to decipher safety measures, new or existing, then they need to go back to the drawing board.

None that they can decipher.

How about mandatory insurance policy?

How about  mandatory sensible policies...

Making fail safe changes means safer conditions for the public, means a price rise if nothing else, Industry members to meet and discuss an outcome, Hmmmmm same shit different day

They should just make the customer sign a release form and be done with it. A release saying thailand is not responsible for youre safety.

You do this at youre own risk .

Interestingly I believe there are no commercial parascending businesses in Australia because the cost of insurance is such that no business would be viable.

This may work here, but not in a litagatious society, as a waiver ( by whatever wording) means little without documentation of training, as the waiver knows not what he / she is waiving.

Interesting being from Perth ( WA I assume) you should be aware that there are parasail businesses happening all over Australia, including in Perth, as well as mandurah

A friend of mine that is at Kata beach every day for most of the day said parasails were back in action today after a 1 day break.  I was in Karon and they weren't operating there, but where the accident happened it's business as usual from what he says and there were plenty of punters lining up for rides.

Yes wife was down at Kata beach late afternoon yesterday and confirms that they were in operation. I have a good view over Kata Beach and so far I have not noticed and parasails in the sky. Mind yu is was very windy and big surf this morning. Doubt they could operate in this weather.

Have to say it's most disappointing that the authorities stand by and say nothing - bigger fat envelopes.
