Two Chinese tourists drown at Phuket beach

By The Nation

PHUKET: -- Two Chinese tourists drowned at Freedom Beach in Phuket’s Krathu district on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Police said the two tourists and a friend violated a red-flag warning and swam despite big surf.

The two victims were identified as Wang Xi Dong and Guo Zi Jie.

The survivor, Liu Wei Jie, 21, said he and the two friends swam briefly before his friends disappeared, so he called an emergency police line to seek help.

Rescuers and lifeguards combed the seabed at the beach until dusk but they failed to locate the bodies.

Might be sad but right now there has been a good surf at Kata beach for the last few days driven by the high onshore wind. Anyone with half a brain should not go out of their depth in these condition, should be careful even wading in the water shallows.

They even ignored the red flag warnings.  It's was their own fault.. sad but true.

If the lifeguards and rescuers are like those in Jomtien, well, kiss your backside goodbye.  The three spend time looking at smartphones, don't separate, face the beach and water,  and have more clothes on that a Muslim girl in Saudi Arabia.

Maybe they understood the red flag as a greeting, looking at their country's flag color...

All people should at least read the dangers of high surf and other information about the ocean.

These Chinese tourists apparently did not and it cost them their lives.

RIP

and even with strong surf, if one doesn't panic, there is plenty of time to sort things out. Don't fight the current or under tow.  But people that didn't grow up anywhere near an ocean just don't seem to know what to do. So they struggle and try to swim furiously up current.  And few people are in great swimming condition.  I am a great swimmer having been on the swim and dive teams, a lifeguard etc.  But I am NOT now a a strong swimmer.  I am nowhere near the physical shape I used to be when younger.  So I know my limits.   I have been underwater, swallowed water, swam to exhaustion etc.  So I am not the panicky type.   Of course there is a chance that these two that died were dashed against the rocks and got injured or knocked out.
