BANGKOK: -- One of Bangkok's top traffic cops has said that from now on all traffic stops in the capital will be filmed.

Jiraphat Phoomjit said this was good for both the police and the public.

The move comes in the wake of an incident at a stop in Rama 2 last week when a traffic cop was dragged by a red plate Benz driver who decided to drive off.

The officer had leaned into the car to get some documents but the driver was hiding something and fled the scene.

She has since given herself up and both her and her husband face charges of assault.

Jiraphat has ordered filming to be done whenever a checkpoint is set up by any one of the met's 88 stations. He said they have the technology in place.

He said that it will mean anyone who fails to stop can be brought to justice.

It will also mean that the public can feel confident that they are being dealt with fairly and politely as everyone is being watched.

He has also ordered police to keep their distance from cars and not lean in after last week's incident that led to the policeman being hurt.

another pointless announcement.

Too true, but typical RTP mentality nonetheless. They have to be seen to be doing something even if what they are doing is pointless and a waste of time.

But wait! All is not wasted. Someone has made some good commission on the purchase of expensive cameras..

good

maybe less corruption & extortion

Oh, I bet you'll still be handing over cash if you look like you have a little more than they feel you should. After all that is a serious crime that needs attention from those charged with upholding the law! No other crime required to receive your fair share of abuse.
