The wildlife crime suppression taskforce known as “Yiaw Dong” raided booths trading animals near several temples in Bangkok, including Erawan Shrine on Thursday, arresting at least 10 people trading in protected species and seizing more than 300 turtles and birds.

The National Parks Department taskforce joined metropolitan police to inspect the booths, discovering animals including red avadavat, which are also known as strawberry finches; Scaly-breasted munia, or spice finches; and Yellow-headed temple turtles.

The suspects were charged with possessing and trading in protected species without permission and detained by police for further legal proceedings.
