PARIS (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron's popularity rating has slumped by 10 percentage points this month, according to an Ifop poll on Sunday - the biggest decline for a new president since 1995.

The poll, published in the Journal du Dimanche newspaper, said 54 percent of people in France were satisfied with Macron in July, compared with 64 percent in June.

It added the last time a newly elected president had lost ground in that way was Jacques Chirac in 1995. The Ifop poll echoed a similar finding in a recent BVA poll.

Macron has had a tough month, marked by a public row over military spending cuts with top armed forces chief General Pierre de Villiers that led to de Villiers' resignation.

Macron also ending up overruling his own prime minister by vowing to press ahead with tax cuts in 2018, while plans to cut housing benefits have also come in for criticism.

Bit like a manager rising up with a team in the football leagues. Easy to get up their with the big boys and please the fans  - but bloody hard to stay there when it starts to go wrong and the same fans call for your head.

He was always a paper man, a former Rothschild banker with little political credentials, that was 100% supported by the old establishment media as they attacked all his opponents. There again buyers remorse for politicians is certainly nothing new as the populace finally wake up that what was promised will never be delivered. By that time though the politician has already made his kickback dough and retiring on easy street.

If I were he, I wouldn't be too worried.  All elected leaders lose a bit up popularity in the first few months after election (however Trump is taking this trend to new lows).

Um, did you happen to notice who the other candidate was?  They would have been even bigger idiots for NOT voting him in.

Tony Blair springs to mind .

Since when has the French had a decent military since  err, centuries ago.

Since then there has been a thriving industry to make white flags.

Just in case the EU fails and Germany starts banging drums again.

But the Brits will die in their 10's of thousands to see them good, time and time again.

I quote Helmuth von Moltke, The first EU advocate. Berlin. 25 June 1940.

"I have the impression that we are rushing for a common currency for the whole of Europe.

That would be progress of course, and one would hope, of lasting significance"

Back then, white French flags were on sale everywhere.

Macron is correct. Why have a military that are all trained to do throw their arms up in the air as a military drill.

Then wave white flags.

A 54% popularity rating is still pretty good,  but wait until he starts trying to introduce his proposed new labour laws facilitating the hiring and firing of employees.  Violent demonstrations in the street plus worker strikes never look good and will certainly not help his popularity. The approximately 50% of French electorate who did not even bother to vote in the last election could have a very decisive effect if motivated to vote next time.   Perhaps his planned tax cuts in 2018 might help him a bit although they will not help those without jobs.

Agree. The corporate bosses will have some excitement in store for themselves.

I don't like M.Macron but he was a long way from being president when this VDO was news - why attach it?

If you re-read my post , paying careful attention this time, the answer is pretty obvious.

Well it didn't take long to read and I don't necessarily disagree.

But attaching a two year old VDO tends to reduce the value of your message. Air France have summer strikes nearly every year. No news there.

I don't want to draw this out but the video was offered, in context and in reply to a post, as suggesting that there will be more in the future ( "look forward to"). It is clear from the context that this has nothing to do with Macron ( present) but will happen again ( future) if he implements labour reform. Ok?

You have your point and I'll make mine. OK?

It is difficult to wonder where the French consensus is.

Communist, Radical, Outright Republican, Anachist, Socialist or  Fachist.

Who knows what tomorrow may bring. (I did spell some things wrong, I don't want to offend a moderator)

Either way, France has now added a new aspect in its culture:  Islam.

I suspect some of these cultures and beliefs may clash.

I'm sure that the French Marines that I worked with in Africa would love to dispute that with you! No white flags in their kit. All kinds of other stuff though.

Well, thanks for sharing your ignorance with us. I suppose this belief can be traced to the France's refusal to participate in the 2nd Iraq War. I do remember all the epithets hurled at France and the renaming of French Fries to Freedom Fries in the Congressional Dining Room.

In fact, as anyone who has access to the Internet should know, France has been fighting very hard indeed against Islamist extremists in North Africa. In fact, it has more troops engaged in fighting Islamist armed forces than does any western nation except the USA.

And your evaluation of the the fighting quality of French troops comes from exactly where? Certainly not from here:
