We scoff at the Elizabethans emptying chamber pots out of bedroom windows. In 400 years time dog-owning will appear equally ludicrous. Dogs cause accidents; spread disease (like chamber pots); kill and disfigure children. Working dogs fine; all others should go in the pot. I gather you don't like dogs or respect people that have one?

Most Western countries that have introduced dangerous dog acts have based their definition of dangerous dogs on breed, ie, banning ownership of certain breeds of dogs. This IMO is completely wrong. Onus has to be on the owner's, again, IMO. If a dangerous dog act was in place it still wouldn't have addressed this issue unless 'Thai' dog breeds were banned and this of course wouldn't happen as they are part of the 'culture'.............................. Gee how about this. The dog bites people and is therefore dangerous. Have a law stating dangerous dogs need to be put down. Not rocket science. Actually standard practice in logical societies. boomerangutang
Dogs contribute to big problems throughout Thailand. A Brit friend just went through a series of rabies shots after being attacked at a wat. Thais are awful at being able to deal with dogs. I've seen hundreds of examples. Dogs in Burma are less of a problem, because Burmese people know how to deal with dogs. They know that dogs can be disciplined. Thais don't know that. Sorry for the kid, but glad he didn't get killed. It proves Thais wrong, because Thais think dogs only go rabid when a farang is nearby. The kid is a brown-skinned local. The Tetsaban being the "responsible" authority. I got bitten by a family dog, just a nip but had to get the shots because when I went back the next day, surprise surprise no dog. Owners moved the dog for fear of it being taken away and having to compensate me. If the dog was there it could have been tested and I may have avoided going to the hospital over a one month period for the series of rabies shots. Tessaban is irrelevant in this case as the dog has an owner. The police are the relevant body (which is why the police are investigating and why the father of the boy reported it to the police and not Tessaban). Tessaban deal with 'public' dogs, or in a case like this their only role may be to catch the dog for observation regarding rabies (if the dog has no records of vaccination). If a dog bites Thai people who are not middle to upper class usually the dog remains. If the dog bites upper class or 'farang', the family will get rid of the dog due fear of having to pay the relevant damages. Better just to get the month rabies shots and almost use them as a pre-exposure for any future possible dog bites. Then if you get bitten again you will only have to do the 2 shots (day 1 and 3). I'm guessing they have laws that nobody bothers with. Certainly in England if a dog causes bodily harm to someone there is no question that the dog will live to do it another time. No 'meeting' requried. Just go in and shoot the mutt, and then shoot the dog.

wildewillie89
I think the most likely outcome will be probably telling the owner to pay the damages, and to either install a higher fence or get rid of the dog. Usually getting 'rid' of the dog involves putting it in a sack and dumping it in another village's temple (so basically just moving the problem to a new district). Purdey
Strange that people are not put down for attacking other people. If it were the case many British football team would have no supporters. Dogs, unlike people, can be taught not to attack people. This sounds like the owner hasn't tried to teach his dog.

It has obviously had the same 'training' 99% of Thai dogs get. Has grown up from a few weeks old in a dog eat dog world, beaten, kicked, starved, angry due to no treatment of parasites. So it lives a life of fear based aggression. Thai dogs usually only ever attack from behind because of this fear aggression (like in this case). Interestingly enough they do it in the hope the dog will be a good 'guard' dog. But as it is all fear based, all anyone has to do is walk up to the dog with a stick and is will stop acting aggressive and run away with its tail between its legs (as this dog did when the golf club came out). Just a massive lack of education among the community. Edited July 25, 2017 by wildewillie89
wildewillie89
Putting the dog to sleep is the obvious step to take. However, no good putting this dog to sleep if laws are not introduced to stop the owner from having a new dog. As the new dog will just end up exactly the same. So if no laws to either educate or ban the owner from owning future dogs, then may as well just keep this dog (which is what has been happening as they know there are no laws to prevent future problems). Dustdevil
A lot of owners, and people in general, are really STUPID about their mutts. There was an unfortunate case in the States, shown on Forensic Files, in which a husband and wife were convicted of murdering their own nine-year-old daughter...because both they and everyone believed the three "playful" dogs in their back yard were harmless. In fact, one of the dogs had ripped the poor little girl shreds. But the jury said the couple did it. A principal reason was, the critical wound in the leg looked like a clean cut, so it must have been done by a person. While the couple languished in prison, a new lawyer and detective went back through the evidence and found that the only reason the fatal cut was clean was because the ER surgeons had cut it cleanly in attempt to save the girl's life. That vital fact was missed in the trial because the lawyers were court-appointed (thus free of charge to the defendants) and the judge denied them funds for an independent forensic investigation. Morals of story. (1) Personally I hate dogs. I grew up with cats, which are subject to idiotic stereotypes, and (2) in the U.S., if you're on a murder trial, pay the money for a good lawyer. Beats56
What happen to the law I heard the other day. If i remember it's law 366. Owner of dogs must be responsible and could be fined 10000bt or 1 year in jail if you don't have control over your dog. Five attacks is four too many. The mutt needs a bullet between the eyes. I put down my German Shepherd because she killed a neighbors sheep. Previous she killed deer in the woods. Once they start this stuff they don't stop. thairookie
Only the intervention of an older boy with a golf club prevented the attack from continuing as the friend succeeded in chasing off the dog. Now will the older boy be sued under the Thai laws protecting dogs ?
