Avoid antibiotics for a cold: expert

Antibiotics can never help cure a cold. Antibiotics kill bacteria. Colds are caused by viruses.

Antibiotics can be used to cure complications arising from bad colds but not the colds.

They are good for people prone to bacterial infection following a cold, so there is good reason to give them early on to these folk.  It's a bout good judgement really.  No need to swing completely the other way.  I agree that they are absolutely pointless for the cold itself.

Doctors, chemists and scientists are no different to anybody else, they argue. How many times do we see  "research" saying this is bad and 12 months later a new report says it is good. This week we have drinking protects you from diabetes, antibiotics can be taken until you are feeling better, what will it be next week?

I heard that antibiotics about 25 years ago. It's hardly an epiphany

No reason to visit the hospital if you have a fever and a flu .  For other symptoms like an infection , yes .  

 

I was unlucky to catch the swine flu a few years ago , it was just a really bad flu but drinking a lot of fluid and stay in bed for 10 days I was 100% fit again , only medication I took was headache tablets.

I got a tick disease (Ehrlichiosis) a few months ago. Interestingly enough when I was begging for the antibiotics (Doxy) whilst admitted in the hospital they REFUSED to give me them. I was only begging because the first 5 days after onset of fever are so important to get them. Ended up with massively enlarged liver and spleen and went into a seizure. Finally, they tried the antibiotics, which sure enough killed the infection.

Important to find a good doctor!  Took me a good 15 or so in my city until I met one who I feel is of a standard of a good doctor back in Australia (and I only met her as she is our baby doctor).

Yes, but maybe you understand that many people need to work everyday, flu or not.

 

So to reduce the chance that the  sickness lasts long, they eat antibiotics. Cheap and we don't care what the self-called experts are saying.

This is actually news in Thailand. Lets call it improvement. But not sure the doctors here educated in Thai universities will listen.  I don't trust many doctors here , that's for sure. 

 

I was misdiagnosed once in 2010, I had a lump in one of my testicles, the Thai specialist at one of the best hospitals in Bangkok told me it must be an infection and sent me home with antibiotics and a bag of other pills and told me to come back after 2 weeks. 

 

But I was worried so instead I went home to Norway , and they did an ultrasound , it was testis cancer. Had the surgery a few days later and I am 100% healthy today . 

 

If I had listened to the doctor I would be in a lot of trouble today.

Interesting story. I was misdiagnosed for an eye problem by the NHS.

My father was misdiagnosed for cancer by the NHS too.

It all seems to be reliant on who you see at the hospital wherever you are ill.
