A free shuttle bus of the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority crashed into several power poles, trees and a mobile-phone signal pole on a sidewalk in Bangkok’s Saphan Kwai area Saturday morning.

The only person injured in the otherwise empty bus was driver Thavorn Meesuk, 42. The accident occurred at 10:30am on Phaholyothin road about 10 metres before the BTS Saphan Kwai station.

The shuttle provides transportation between the Taopoon and Bang Sue stations of the MRTA electric train.

An electric pole on the road island was hit by the bus about 20 metres before it stopped at the bus stop in front of Ideo Mix Phaholyothin condominium. Prior to stopping, it hit additional power poles, trees and the mobile-phone signal pole on the sidewalk.

The bus driver was severely injured and could not tell police what had happened.

Wachira Suanrotfail, the manager of the route, said Thavorn had just taken the bus from a capacity check at the Land Transport Department, and was heading to the Taopoon station to wait for passengers.

Watchira said BMTA officials had yet to check footage from a video camera installed on the roof of the bus to see what happened.

The crashed bus initially blocked two lanes of traffic and police had to tow it away.

Let me see if I got this right . The driver was the only one on the empty bus that was injured on the bus.
