Car camera recording at 1080p - Can't read license plates

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

My new car camera recording video at 1080p, which according the the box is Full HD, can not record the license plate number on a car which is parked two car lengths in front of my car.  The picture is grainy and distorted.  With my Smartphone camera I get better VGA pictures.  This car camera also has the capability of taking 'still shots' at 3M.  The shots are no better than the supposive 1080p video.  Grainy, distorted, and visually unreadable?

What am I missing here?  Is this normal.  Sorry.  Gonna name names because I have the pictures and video to back up what I'm saying.  Dengo - 'Black Eyes' Dual 2.  I've checked and rechecked the resolution setting, the camera itself, the lens, etc.  Is this normal for the car camera industry?  I'm pretty ticked off.  This was the replacement for another Dengo car camera which had other problems.  Wife's choice, not mine.  What's going on here?

I've heard that this topic has been "done to death."  Let's do it some more.  I want a quality camera, mid-priced camera that can has enough resolution at 1080p to discern license plates, and that has English language user manuals and at least a one year warranty.  And a money back quality guarantee.  I also want both front and rear video.  Between purchases and installation I'm 5000 THB light, and I still have a piece of crap for a car camera.

I need legitimate suggestions for front/rear, mid-priced, quality cameras.  I will not buy them online again -ever.  I will not buy Dengo again - ever.
I want to buy it from a retailer so I have the option to deal directly with the retailer if the camera does not meet my expectations.  I expect the retailer to guarantee the purchase.  I'm close enough to Chiang Mai to by a camera there. I'm not doing this again!

1080p is just resolution, the actual quality is determined by the sensor and lens quality, only decent ones are clear enough.

I once bought a cheap 1200 Baht thing supposed to be Full HD.

Total crap. Age old encoder format, huge files, blurry result.

Have another one now (HP brand) for 3800 Baht.

Acceptable.

There is always a trade off for the popular wide angle view.

Even with a decent cam the badly designed Thai plates become unreadable quickly.

My dashcam

You can check out my upload above from my dashcam bought one year ago. It comes with Ambarella chipset, the quality is quite decent for me.

It may help the OP (either way ) if you said what brand/model and price?

I find it confusing that you passed that minivan at only 104 kph at the 56 second mark.

Impressed..................

Problem with recommendations is whats good for one isnt for others.

My choice which im happy with on numerous levels is

Vicovation MF2 GPS  I have one front one back on pick up both have 64gb memory cards in. Give good clear pictures day and night and with company software give a clear  precise and accurate postion at any given time on read back mapping.

Available at Lazada

What's misleading is that the demo's in the store are always so clear you can count the legs on the spider hanging on for dear life 3 car lengths ahead.

Then when you plug the sucker in...

That's pretty accurate. I'm running on Burapawithi express way which speed is limited at 90km/h and there are speed camera around.

Usually you can change the resolution. I tried all available and opted for 720p HD. I just have a 9gb card and have it on 3 minute loops, a higher gb card isn't really necessary.

The advantage of my Apeman or similar is i also use it as an action cam on my bike and scooter

Here's a screenshot the the video I took this afternoon.  I'd pixilate the license number, but I don't have to because it is unreadable.  The truck is no more than 1 1/2 car lengths in from of me.  Can't read the license or the writing on the back of the truck.
This is suppose to be 1080dpi High Definition? This is what this Dengo product is advertised as providing.
So my next question would be, is there no regulatory agency within Thailand the will hold retailers accountable for blatantly false claims?  Honest question here.  Or is it simply 'caveat emptor', buyer beware.
I've told the wife to send it back but I'm not holding my breath on a better replacement or a refund.
Let's just go with buyer beware.  My recommendation to anyone planning to buy a car camera.  Don't do it without being able to first physically check out the dash cam, the video quality, and the display quality.  Which means I'd personally avoid buying one online.  Buy one from a shop, and take the time to know what you're getting.  Which is what I'll be doing when I buy another to replace this.....<expletive> grrrrr. And I obviously can't recommend Dengo.

Attached is another video I managed to take last Sunday. I managed to see road rage just in front of my eyes where someone broke the the side windows of a pickup at junction near Rama 4.

Did you forget to take the thin plastic cover off  the lens?  possibility.

Nope.  That was the first thing I checked.  Removed the film on the display and the lens.  I wish that was it.

That was the quality I was expecting.  What's the dash cam?

If I could hand you my reading glasses though the internet I would be happy to point this out in the original post.   "Dengo - 'Black Eyes' Dual 2"   <don't feel bad>
Not sure about the price as the wife ordered it.  Under 2000 THB.

Perhaps you need new reading glasses then as my quote was of Shady86's post and referring that it may help the OP - you...................

Now if Shady86 mentioned his camera model I can't see that and maybe I do need new glasses......

Edit - and just noticed you asked above as well..........

Op's camera is fake 1080p. Always prefer novatek or ambarella chipset dashcams if you have no idea what you want to buy. There are other good chipsets too. Gearbest is great place to buy them.

This story only gets better.  My wife sent the camera, a Dengo - 'Black Eyes' Dual 2 Dash Cam, back to Dengo.  This is suppose to be 1080 DPI max, 140 degree angle front camera and a rear mounted 90 degree angle camera in the back.

I just got the replacement dash cam back.  It's a 720 DPI max, 90 degree front-only camera.

So she's on the phone and we'll obviously be sending this back too.  In the meantime, one question:
Is there government office of Consumer Complaints regarding retail products sold in Thailand?  I seriously want to file a consumer complaint.  The original product was not the advertised quality, and they sent me back a sub-standard model to replace the sub-standard camera we originally purchased.

Dengo - Buyer beware!
I'm one unhappy camper.  This organization has some serious issues.  And I have photos, videos, and documentation to back that statement up.

My wife bought a couple of Dengo cameras at 1k each as well. They are indeed, crap. One of them even has random blue text printed diagonally over the screen, I suspect it's the result of using a reject from a QC process.

Really cruddy and cheap build quality in general. Would have returned them but we bought them for an imminent road trip and they were better than nothing.

Apologies. I'm using GS98C with Ambarella chipset. Bought it early last year so I expect there is something better now? The reason I bought this was the ability to record 1080p @ 60fps which makes video smoother.

I'd suggest everyone to find something newer, I heard Xiaomi Yi Dashcam is good too.
