BANGKOK: -- The Appeals Court on Tuesday upheld the first Court's ruling to jail a popular host of morning news programme Sorrayuth Suthassanachinda to 13 years and four months in the Rai-Som bribery and embezzlement scandal.

Sorrayuth, the founder of Rai-Som Co Ltd, has long been a popular host of the morning news show “Rueang Lao Chao Nee”. He has also appeared in two other news programmes; all of them are broadcast on Channel 3.

Last year, Rai-Som, Sorrayuth and one of his former staffers, Montha Thiradet, were convicted of wrongdoing related to the payment of more than Bt600,000 to Pitchapa Iamsa-ard, who was then an employee of MCOT, between 2005 and 2006.

Pitchapa, a defendant in the same case, did not report to MCOT additional TV commercials that Rai-Som aired during its popular TV programme “Kui Khui Khao” on Channel 9. As a result, Rai-Som received additional advertising revenue that was not shared with MCOT, resulting in damages of more than Bt138 million.

I used to watch this guy on the news... it was interesting how he seemed above the law when reporting the news...

Guess the shoe is on the other foot now and it is now his turn to be looked down upon.

The Appeals Court today (Aug 29) upheld jail sentence for former TV anchor Sorrayuth Suthassanachinda after finding him guilty of cheating state-owned channel MCOT of over 138 million baht  in advertising revenue between 2005 and 2006.

The charges were filed by the National Anti Corruption Commission against four defendants. They are Mrs Pichapa Iamsa-ard, an MCOT employee; Rai Som Company; Mr Sorrayuth, Rai Som Company’s owner; and Ms Montha Theeradet, Rai Som Company’s employee.

According to the lawsuit, Sorrayuth founded Rai Som Co in 2004. The company then had a contract with MCOT to co-produce the Kui Kui Khao news programme. Under the contract, Rai Som was allocated advertising slots of between two and five minutes during the news programme.

So you don't think it matters he committed a fraud to steal a large sum of money?

Thing is, justice seems to only be applied by the regime 'du jour' to those that are in the opposite camp. It's a continual feature of Thai 'justice'.

If there really was an impartial judicial system, half of the Thai elite would be in jail for some form of theft, fraud or graft, regardless of who they are identified with.

But that ain't gonna happen anytime in my lifetime, so here we are

No it's been fixed now....there is only one winner in any election.

I don't condone the theft and he should be punished, but if memory serves he paid the money back and that should count for something. I don't see any of the other assorted band of thieves paying restitution.

Quite obvious, there are some people who are so blinded by Thaksinitis that anything in the courts is seen as anti Thaksin.
