  1. A lot of Las Vegas visitors leave with more than they started with.... but....
  2. Here's a chart of 35+ years of the US$ vs a basket of other major currencies. Since pointing is a thing in Thailand, please point to the decline you're referencing. https://www.cnbc.com/quotes/.DXY
  3. In a regular savings account, for every 800 ฿ on deposit for the entire year, you should receive 1 ฿ in each of June and December. Maybe you blinked and missed it.????
  4. You just need to head to the parts of Canada that had many immigrants from Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Ukraine, etc. Only problem is ... that part of Canada is mostly boring farm and ranch land.
  5. There is not much need for an ATM card these days. Most banks have a cardless withdrawal option in their smartphone app. Start the cardless withdrawal on your phone, and start the cardless withdrawal at the ATM. The ATM should display a QR code which you scan with your phone. The ATM spits out the money.
  6. I suggest you check at a branch the next time you're in one. It's easy to open another BKB account if that turns out to be the best option.
  7. My standard savings account at Bangkok bank received the same interest as my general savings accounts at Kasikorn and SCB. At opening, I just requested a savings account at all three banks. Was your account a Foreign Currency Deposit account or a non-resident account? The interest on those is indeed minimal.
  8. Both SCB and Bangkok bank produced the letter and statements within the 15 minutes I spent at the teller. I made the requests at my "home" branches. Because I was switching my 800K from one bank to the other, I only requested statements covering about 8 months. The statements were dated on the day of request but showed balances as of close of business for the prior day.
  9. Social media has fixed the prior fixation on facts.
  10. It sounds like you're already in Thailand, but not yet on a 12 month extension from Immigration. My recommendation is to use Schwab or Capital One in US and Bangkok bank in Thailand. I moved from US to Chiang Mai in Oct. 2020. I tried to open my first account at Kasikorn but they were adamant that I must have a work permit or have a 12 month extension stamp. Bangkok bank allowed me to open an account with passport, residence certificate and my non-immigrant "O" visa. Other posts have pointed you to the better banks for receiving Wise transfers. However if you intend to use 800K in the bank to qualify for your retirement extensions, I recommend you use a single large SWIFT transfer. SWIFT transfers larger than about 20K US$ generally yield more Baht per US$ when all fees and exchange rates are accounted for. Another efficient method to move US$ to Thailand is using a debit card that charges no foreign transaction fees. I am familiar with two US banks/brokerages that offer good debit cards, Capital One and Schwab. Using this type of transfer will not be acceptable if Immigration rules insist on proof of foreign source of your funds. AFAIK, only Bangkok bank offers free "cash advances" on debit cards at the teller. The limits imposed by the US financial institution are generally much higher for teller withdrawals than from the ATM.
  11. I am dreading dealing with Manila. I need to start getting retirement benefits on my own work record in a few months (age 70). They messed up my application for ex-spousal benefits in 2021. Their error delayed my benefits for several months. I sent them an inquiry on Mar. 1... only got the automated response indicating reception of my request. I think I'll reactivate my Twitter account to take advantage of your strategy.
  12. Will B's statement is perhaps better stated as follows: The more religious people become the less they behave like good Christians. Will B. was classifying the desired behavior in a manner that will be more familiar than any other to most AN readers.
  13. Surely, you can think of some financial/educational/administrative policies or practices in Thailand or Cambodia that can be improved upon by those with experience from outside Thailand.
  14. Probably the IO's shoe size is 9.
  15. Several posts have mentioned that PEA bills are not scannable for easy payment in the Bangkok mobile app. They're correct.
  16. Since I live in CM, I drive by a Kasikorn branch many times a week. Whenever I do a 90 day report, I can request a residence certificate which takes 10 minutes. For a few minutes of sitting with service staff, I then have the convenience of easier utility payments for many years. It seems you have a poor understanding of reward vs effort. Bangkok bank mobile app sucks for ease of utility payments when compared to Kasikorn.
  17. Perhaps you can try a Kasikorn branch in a larger city that should have more experience with retired foreigners. I opened my account in Chiang Mai, where I live. I needed to have a 12-month extension stamp in my passport and a residence certificate from Immigration.
  18. Any savings account (at a Thai chartered bank) can be used.... even those accounts that don't have a bank book.
  19. I have the same frustration with BKK bank's mobile app. Kasikorn bank's mobile app makes it dead simple and that's one of the reasons I bothered to open an account there as well.
  20. I merely followed the advice offered many times on this forum. I got my Thai tax ID and politely persisted with the branch staff that withholding can be stopped. If they didn't know how, I asked them to call their head office or telephone help line.
  21. As of last December neither I or my Thai wife was subject to tax withholding from SCB, Kasikorn, LH Bank or Bangkok bank savings accounts. I did have withholding on a small fixed deposit account. Neither of us exceeded the 20K ฿ limit that is exempted from taxation.
  22. That can easily be done on a computer if you have the right tools. MacOS has the tools included for free. I haven't used Windows for a decade so I can't offer help on that platform. If you're on Mac, this guy will have a video to guide you: https://www.youtube.com/user/macmostvideo/videos
  23. You just can't help yourself can you? You keep spouting this nonsense opinion. Panang is real Thai food. You are correct in that it is not often offered in the better Thai restaurants. The reason is NOT because it isn't Thai food. The reason is that Thai customers don't want to order such typical, home made entree when they splurge on a meal in a restaurant. My Thai family do eat panang sold by street vendors when they want a simple meal. Your isolation from the actual experience of Thai people is quite clear.
  24. Has the law changed since Dec. 31 when my bank gave me table scraps in interest without any withholding? I had given them my Thai tax ID when I opened the account in '21 and have never had tax withheld.
