Stampede out of THB?
ExpatOilWorker replied to khunjake's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Good points, but why today? Balance of trade data is due for release September 26th, maybe someone leaked the numbers. 10 out of the past 12 months have been a deficit. -
Are you thinking of buying a BYD EV?
ExpatOilWorker replied to DUNROAMIN's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
We already did the math, electricity consumption in Thailand will increase by 0.06% per 100,000 EVs added. ???? ???? ????. -
Electric Vehicles in Thailand

I partly agree with you, profit doesn't matter.....for now. I thing we are in the a golden era for EV buyers right now and possibly for another year or so. Let's face it, you get a lot of car in Neta, BYD and MG for the 550-900k baht you pay. Eventually governments will get tired of paying the bill and manufacturers are done fighting over market share. At that point even the Chinese manufacturers will have to sacrifice growth for profit and sell cars at higher prices then we see today. -

Very interesting report, but aren't they all missing the elephant in the room? Profit? Are MG, BYD and other Chinese EV manufacturers even profitable without the subsidies? -
Thailand’s revenue departments has released new guidelines which will see all income from abroad taxed as personal income tax regardless of whether it was earned income or savings. A senior official at the Ministry of Finance confirmed a document released by the revenue department over the weekend was accurate. According to the document, “…those that have earnings from occupation or business abroad or wealth that is located abroad…and has brought these assets into Thailand…must factor this into their personal income tax for the year.” The program will begin January 1, 2024 and apply only to tax residents in Thailand meaning tourists and short term workers will be exempt. It is unclear at this point how this will apply to foreigners living in Thailand on a retirement visa. This is a developing story and will be subject to update. https://www.thaienquirer.com/50744/thai-government-to-tax-all-income-from-abroad-for-tax-residents-starting-2024/

Since this thread have run its course, let's finish with some humor. Tesla's Mega 98-Supercharger Location Runs In Part On A Diesel Generator: Report Hidden in plain sight across the way from the Harris Ranch Supercharger’s main stations, behind a Shell station, is a small diesel plant that has helped power Tesla’s footprint. https://jalopnik.com/tesla-supercharger-location-diesel-generator-report-1850804146

Very valid point. Older EVs may be ticking time bombs ????. In fact, the analysis shows older cars are far and away the most likely to catch fire and the risk of fire increases the older a car gets. A total of 77 percent of all car fires that occurred in 2017 involved vehicles made in 2007 or earlier, so those at least 10 years old or older. The original Tesla Roadster didn't come out until 2008, and only 2,500 of those were built. The first mass-market EV, the Nissan Leaf, wasn't released until 2010. Only the earliest modern EVs, of which very few were sold, are 10 years old today. The NFPA report cites worn-out parts and deferred maintenance as the likely cause of increased fire danger for older cars. https://www.motortrend.com/features/you-are-wrong-about-ev-fires?slide=7

Seriously? I thought we were done spewing that per sales garbage ???? statistics. Per billion miles, Tesla EV are 10 times less likely to burn than ICE vehicles. As for Chinese EVs, we don't know yet, since only false or at best unreliable numbers are coming out of China. By the end of 2024 we should have enough EVs on the road in Thailand to draw some sort of conclusion.

The answer is actually square in the middle of your two numbers 1 in 40,000 EVs will catch fire pre year if it is a Tesla. For the Chinese brands, we don't know yet. I have also been wondering about the insurance liability. Historically insurance claims have always been based on accident fault. But who is at fault if the vehicle selv-ignite and burn down 5 cars next to it? The EV owner, who did nothing wrong? The car manufacturer? The other car owners cover their own cost? The charging station, even if working as per design?

Most condos in Thailand have 3-7 floor of parking with 2-400 cars right under hundreds of sleeping residents. As the recent Hanoi fire shows that can be a dangerous and deadly combination. The fire suppressing system is made to control a single vehicle fire, but what will happen when half the cars are EVs and a chain reaction starts? Fire regulations sure needs to be updated to reflect this new thread. A firewall every 3rd vehicle could be a solution.
