Are you thinking of buying a BYD EV?
ExpatOilWorker replied to DUNROAMIN's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
I truly admire your faith in the the Chinese fortune cookie ???? battery claims, but for us humble souls that live in the present, we just have to wait a few years to see actual results. On a more serious note, please share how the SoH is accurately measured? Can you run the battery down to 10% charge it to 90% and just measure how much KwH were used and then extrapolate to 100%? Some power is however lost during the charging process. It was earlies discussed how a German company attach a data box that follow the battery over a few charging cycles and then estimate SoH, so no a simple and cheap test. -

It is a Chinese car after all, so future promises hold no present value. When owners after 7 years get half the original range, BYD will hook up a fancy ching ding ding machine that shows the battery ???? is still 82% good ????. Bye bye, have nice day ???? ????. You buy latest model BYD Attaboy 1000, have better warranty. -

How did the BYD test drive go? I am impressed by how many km you have put on the Fortuner, the best wine shops must be far from your home. -

Interesting and odd at the same time. Not sure why the two quotations differ so much. Maybe someone with more insurance experience can enlighten us? -

Electric Vehicles in Thailand

I partly agree with you, profit doesn't matter.....for now. I thing we are in the a golden era for EV buyers right now and possibly for another year or so. Let's face it, you get a lot of car in Neta, BYD and MG for the 550-900k baht you pay. Eventually governments will get tired of paying the bill and manufacturers are done fighting over market share. At that point even the Chinese manufacturers will have to sacrifice growth for profit and sell cars at higher prices then we see today. -

Very interesting report, but aren't they all missing the elephant in the room? Profit? Are MG, BYD and other Chinese EV manufacturers even profitable without the subsidies? -
Thailand’s revenue departments has released new guidelines which will see all income from abroad taxed as personal income tax regardless of whether it was earned income or savings. A senior official at the Ministry of Finance confirmed a document released by the revenue department over the weekend was accurate. According to the document, “…those that have earnings from occupation or business abroad or wealth that is located abroad…and has brought these assets into Thailand…must factor this into their personal income tax for the year.” The program will begin January 1, 2024 and apply only to tax residents in Thailand meaning tourists and short term workers will be exempt. It is unclear at this point how this will apply to foreigners living in Thailand on a retirement visa. This is a developing story and will be subject to update. https://www.thaienquirer.com/50744/thai-government-to-tax-all-income-from-abroad-for-tax-residents-starting-2024/

Very valid point. Older EVs may be ticking time bombs ????. In fact, the analysis shows older cars are far and away the most likely to catch fire and the risk of fire increases the older a car gets. A total of 77 percent of all car fires that occurred in 2017 involved vehicles made in 2007 or earlier, so those at least 10 years old or older. The original Tesla Roadster didn't come out until 2008, and only 2,500 of those were built. The first mass-market EV, the Nissan Leaf, wasn't released until 2010. Only the earliest modern EVs, of which very few were sold, are 10 years old today. The NFPA report cites worn-out parts and deferred maintenance as the likely cause of increased fire danger for older cars. https://www.motortrend.com/features/you-are-wrong-about-ev-fires?slide=7
