  1. I remember they had a huge sale in the days before KSK closed down, so I suspect they just closed for good. There are many similar ones. e.g., at Airport Plaza on the ground floor just a few meters behind the Nana bakery.
  2. More accurately, China has a "high speed" (so to speak) train in Laos. Huge difference.
  3. Thailand again tonight 8pm, against Canada. Tough job but not impossile. All the best!
  4. Another example of how a simple question becomes a cloud of tangent discussions on this forum. @ubonjoe and @DrJack54gave the answers at the top. UK passport renewals and Cambodian banks could be addressed elsewhere please.
  5. There we go with the typical stereotypes. Were you there with the OP and the IO, do you actually know what went on between them? Besides, you don't seem to have much experience with the complications set up by immigration in other countries, lucky you. If anything, I'd say this thread shows how this forum can make a huge confusion with too much information, often contraddictory and sometimes incorrect, out of a relatively simple subject. One problem is that the forum has an absolutely abysmal archive search capability, a lot of identical questions come up over and over and over again.
  6. Do we really need these Thai-bashing posts at every Buddhist holiday? Especially from people who talk about "the rest of the world" without having any clue.
  7. To get back to CM: flooding due to Ping overflow, reported today in several areas along the river, Chang Klan, B11 underpasses.
  8. OP, some time ago I came across this. It appears to be on the luxury side, and not so close by (18km), but perhaps it gives you some additional perspective. Their site has plenty of info on rates, specialized care, etc. I have no direct experience with them.
  9. ok, but there are circumstances. e.g., recently it's been raining occasionally dogs and cats in CM, to the point that some intersections/underpasses were suddenly closed to traffic for a while, or at least impossible for small scooters. Also, I remember one morning that Airport Plaza (with many take-out restaurants) had its main m/cycle parking closed. I don't say this is what's happening to the OP (he mentions that it happens to him every time that it's raining, which seems a bit weird), but if the delivery driver cannot reach the restaurant or the customer, I think cancellation after a while is not so strange. Perhaps with a customer able to chat in Thai they can explain the reasons better.
  10. The first statement is correct - though "a lot" is subjective. There is one additional difference, which is probably not relevant to you: with "marriage" you can in principle work legally in Thailand, subject to obtaining a work permit. With "retirement", you are barred from doing so. Your notes and quotations from Imm do not make much sense. Perhaps you should go there with your wife to avoid being lost in translation? Anyway, the long and short of it is that with marriage you need to deposit (one time only, and keep it) 400k, with retirement 800k. There are ways to use part of this deposit and replenish it at various phases during each year between extensions, but if you can just deposit and forget it would be the simplest. There are also alternatives, like transferring some amount each month. Careful, as this needs to be properly documented to satisfy Imm. One-time deposit OR monthly transfers, not both. If "marriage", make sure you are legally married in Thailand. Some people think they are married after some ceremony in a village temple, which is not sufficient. About your second statement "...low value now" : Low compared to what? GBP to Baht is currently about 42, stable in the last month. It has been on average 43 in the past year as well as in the past 5 years. Don't hold your breath waiting for it to reach 60 or higher as many years ago.
  11. I have lived in places where I experienced -65C, and others with +50C. "Feeling cold" (or hot) is a very subjective thing which is not necessarily related to outside temperature. It depends how well you are prepared for it. In Thailand, I have been driving at night on Doi Inthanon in winter, +4C, and feeling damn cold inside the car (aircon only cold settings, not heating, of course) with relatively poor clothing and windows a crack open to avoid fogging. In CM, we use a light blanket to sleep in winter at home for 1-2 months, that's good enough.
  12. They just read their ruling: the clock started in 2017.
  13. We have already established that you and I live in two Chiang Mai's located in alternate universes. Actually, as far as I can tell from your posts, you don't even live in Chiang Mai itself. In my Chiang Mai, no rain in the past two days and the only flooding in recent weeks was a flash flood neat Immigration, it lasted a few hours.
  14. It depends on the area. Nimman area: 9. Night Bazar area: 2. Old town inside the moat: 6-7. Shopping malls, restaurants: 10 (but we lost a few of both). Traffic: 9. Red buses and tuk-tuks, unfortunately, a solid 8. IMO this is a great time to visit CM: very affordable hotels, most activities as pre-Covid, about half of usual non-chinese tourists, about 0 of usual chinese tourists. Night life so so, not that I would know, but then CM has never been the place for that. Clean air, no extensive flooding, pleasant temps.
  15. I especially love their attitude, always smiling whether point or mistake. Compare that with some other teams where the ladies seem like bulldogs on the leash.
  16. btw, all results and match schedule can be found here. The "highlights", about 5-min recap of each game, can be easily found on you tube for free. The full games, including replay of past ones, can be watched with a rather cheap subscription via streaming from the same site. The games in which Thailand is playing are shown live on public TV channels, though you need some patience as the exact TV channel changes every time. Next one this evening, THA-KOR, 7pm our time.
  17. OP, I assume you want this in CM - a point that some of the posters before me seem to have overlooked. I tried what you want several years ago, it was possible but they would charge me double the fare as they were starting from the airport. Maybe things have improved, you can ask. Now I use grab to go to the airport, easy, clearly stated price. Grab allows to book for a specific date and time, but it will cost you some extra. I find that if you live in a well-served area about 10-15 minutes ahead of your desired pick-up time are sufficient. I use airport taxi from CNX to home. Prices are very comparable with the two options in the two directions.
  18. Look, my last post on this. Clearly you are on your own personal crusade. Many years ago, in Europe, I managed to puncture one of my eardrums. Blood and all. I went to a local hospital, spoke with the ENT doctor (the guy with the PhD). He examined me, then he sent me to take a test in some "audiology" (?) test room netx door. Waited a while, a male nurse appeared. Forgive me if for the sake of brevity I call that a "technician". Certainly not a PhD guy or "doctor of Audiology". He switched off the lights, went into a cabin, rotated knobs and sliders and asked me if I could hear this and that for some ten minutes. Perhaps this is what you have in mind? I was summoned back to the doctor (the one with PhD) office and we talked about medication, recovery, and so on. btw, I was presented with a bill in comparison to which the ignominy of the package that you refuse from BKH would appear very sweet. It would have been impossible for me to see the "test-taking guy" by himself without seeing the doctor first. Fact, not opinion. And that's why I say that I find the response you got from BKH quite logical. Now this is my opinion, I admit. Good luck with your crusade.
  19. Volleyball is a sport where height makes a difference, and watching the Polish and Thai girls compete close to the net couldn't have made this clearer. On top of that, the home advantage: it was amost scary too see the court full of red-white supporters. All in all, a predictable outcome and well done to Thai players. Wish them better chance tonight with Croatia.
  20. There's no reason not to have more than one reason.
  21. Just make sure you don't get confused and use the wrong one for yourself.
  22. Wait until the floods come, then you may not find them so odd.
  23. It all depends on the compromise you want to accept, between making it easy and fast for you now, or making it easy and fast for your gf to benefit after your demise.
  24. I just went through the same. The testament is written in Thai, only, for my Thailand assets. Redacted by a City Office notary, witnessed, translated to me by a person that I entirely trust, signed, a copy deposited at the local city office, the original with my wife. Unassailable by any hypothetical contestants. As the document pertains assets which are in Thailand, I find this logical. btw, although I do not read Thai in general, the document is simple enough (mainly condo, bank accounts) that I could more or less follow even the reading by the Thai notary. If you want it your way, then have the document written, witnessed and notarized in the UK. Be mindful that in this case it will have to follow the UK law (e.g., if you have descendants or wife in the UK maybe they cannot be excluded entirely). Then your gf will have to jump some extra hurdles such as to obtain a legally valid translation, possibly at your embassy, to act on it. You can't get away from the fact that, if you are leaving assets in Thailand to her, they can be released only upon presenting a valid Thai document.
