Eight Companies Compete to Bid for Decade-old Rice
bamnutsak replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I think this rice has been "auctioned" before, but the winning bidders failed to come up with the cash. Which leads to the perpetual headline: Old rice 'to be auctioned next month' -

BKK Bank Anti American
bamnutsak replied to nitehawk42's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Can you elaborate? You've made transfers of a similar amount as recently as when? Then bang, "recently", a transfer was rejected? Was there any message about the rejection? Could you make the transfer using the web/pc-based iBanking site? Did the branch offer any document/public statement outlining this change? What was the amount? Amounts over 50,000 baht require facial recognition registration. Maybe contact customer service on 1333? No. I am an American and just made a transfer from BBL to SCB (my account) using the mobile app (on my "old" phone - I'm trying to register a "new" phone, without success to date. -
What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2024)
bamnutsak replied to Rimmer's topic in Entertainment
Hit Man Netflix Richard Linklater's latest film. Based on a true story about an undercover "fake" hit man. More buzz for Glenn Powell. Great NOLA sights and sounds. Love some of the street signs/intersections. 9/10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0g4cJ4NE8HA -

What did you do "at the ATM"? Again, as of this week when installing and trying to sign on to the mobile app, your only option is to "Get Started", which takes you to Step 1 or 4, "Your Personal information" - Passport no. and Date of Birth. I tried my "old" passport (~ 3 years past) - rejected. I tried my new passport (issued 3 years ago) and used at the branch ~ seven times for new passbooks, updating telephone and issuing a new ATM card) - rejected.

I had problems when I tried to enable a NEW phone. The first step (now, step one of three) involves entering your passport number and DoB. Message: Unable to proceed Your identity information at the bank is no longer up to date. Please bring your citizen ID card or passport to any Bangkok Bank branch and contact our staff. (RA02). Off to the branch tomorrow to verify if my current passport is registered. FWIW, for the SCB Easy app it took ~ 90 seconds to enable on the new phone.

American Tourist Dies After Falling Off a Hotel Balcony in Pattaya
bamnutsak replied to snoop1130's topic in Pattaya News
The deceased's Instagram page...based on the Wesleyan connection. https://www.instagram.com/mike1.61803/ It looks like he was well-traveled. That looks like a large block of hash (guess it could be heroin) to purchase if you're going to end it all? -
Initially this "scheme", in addition to buying votes, was meant for some 50 Million people, for the purpose of "juicing" an otherwise moribund economy. Since the initial promise, it's been whittled down multiple times. Now it's down to just under 15 Million "fragile" people. An abject failure, limping along on life support with no identified source of funding. Incompetence. Has this government accomplished anything?

Travel card - What is it?
bamnutsak replied to ravip's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
For those with SCB accounts, consider the SCB Planet Card. Very handy, managed from the SCBEasy app. Visa-branded, Tap & Go. No uplifts. https://www.scb.co.th/en/personal-banking/stories/life-style/planet-dream-trip.html -
Is it also reasonable to assume that those visitors from the ~ 36 NEW countries are not currently eligible for ANY tourist visa exemption? But they will be at some point in the near-ish future? This will make travel planning challenging, and one can't make an airline ticket purchase, or travel plans, yet.

60 days of Paradise: Thailand extends visa exemption for tourists
bamnutsak replied to george's topic in Thailand News
Are these changes permanent? Or will they expire/have to be extended by the government? This certainly frees up Immigration from having to process 30-Day extensions. It makes one wonder why they had a 30-day limit in the first place. -
Thai land bridge project faces concerns over land disputes
bamnutsak replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
This land-bridge "scheme" is fairly recent, maybe first proposed in 2005? The Kra Isthmus Canal was first proposed in 1677. I think you can stick a fork in the "land bridge". Such a project would require significant focus from successive governments. Not exactly a strong suit for Thailand. -
Taxing times: Tourism Minister stands firm with 300 baht tourist tax
bamnutsak replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
https://thailand.prd.go.th/en/content/category/detail/id/2078/iid/277841 I think the 730 baht (or equivalent currency where the ticket is issued) is denoted as "TS" on the ticket break-out. Domestic PSC is 130 baht. -
I was able to sign up (email+pw, OTP), add my mailing address (the address where my new+old passports will be mailed to me), and then get through to the payment screen. Quite simple and straightforward. Personally, I would use the QR Promptpay option. Everything is set up and my shopping bag is ready for my renewal towards the end of this year.

Taxing times: Tourism Minister stands firm with 300 baht tourist tax
bamnutsak replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
The current Passenger Service Charge for International arrivals is 730 baht. An extra 300 baht would total 1,030 baht. The "730" goes to AoT. The biggest hurdle is "collection" of this 300 baht fee. Thailand wants airlines to create a new line item, airlines, to date, have refused to do this. They could raise the PSC to 1,030 and AoT could remit 300 baht to the Tourism/Sport Ministry but that may be illegal? There is also no way to avoid charging Thais unless the government rebates it. Every Tourism/Sport Minster salivates at the thought of "managing" a NINE BILLION Baht Slush Fund.
