Trump wins Iowa caucuses, cementing frontrunner status in 2024 race
Lacessit replied to webfact's topic in World News
I used to work with a guy from Siberia. As a student, he was sent to the wheat harvests in the new lands. The harvest was stored in bags. Thread and machines to sew the bags up either never arrived, or arrived too late. As a result, about one-third of the crop was usually lost to birds and vermin. -
IMO it is a good idea to wear socks in Thailand, due to the risk of opportunistic infections. Some years ago, I was just wearing sandals here. My right foot became infected with cellulitis, and it took a 10,000 baht course of intravenous antibiotic to fix it.

New Thai Tax On Remittances??

Cicero said virtue is its own reward, we seem to have moved on from the Romans, when I look at some rich people. -
New Thai Tax On Remittances??
Lacessit replied to giogio's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I am confused. Do you file your 2023 tax return at the end of March 2024, or 2023? That would make it the FY in 2022. -

Depends on whether the 180 days is retrospective. So many question marks. -
New Thai Tax On Remittances??

Those people presumably would have to file, and wait for the RD to decide if their pensions are taxable. I am pleased I stuck with the 800K baht method, after briefly flirting with the income method years ago. -
IF Not Thailand: Then Pago Pago?
Lacessit replied to GammaGlobulin's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
A couple of points for your consideration: Living too close to the sea invites tsunamis. On the bright side, rising sea levels are unlikely to affect the topography, if you are sensible about where you rent. According to my favorite American author, John D MacDonald, Samoans view their American colonizers much like the Indonesians view the Dutch, or Indians view the British. That is, given the opportunity, they would cheerfully flay, gut and roast them alive. Thailand does have the plus of never having been colonized. -
New Thai Tax On Remittances??
Lacessit replied to giogio's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Anyone with two brain cells would have transferred sufficient funds ( up until March at least ) prior to January 1, to ensure there was no reportable income. If there is no income to report, why would they need to file? Best wishes for a speedy recovery. -
New Thai Tax On Remittances??
Lacessit replied to giogio's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
I would suggest everyone takes a deep breath, and calm down. Anyone who lives in Thailand for less than half the year can stop reading now. The only action one MAY need to take is getting a Thai tax number prior to their next extension. Which may or may not be needed at Immigration. No one needs to put in a tax return until March 2025. The Thai authorities have yet to clarify what happens with countries that have double taxation agreements. Having a Thai tax number does not necessarily mean a tax return has to be filed. I have an Australian TFN, and have not put in a return for the last two years. The Thai authorities have already said transfers of savings accumulated prior to January 1, 2024, are exempted from tax. That is my reading of the situation, feel free to disagree. -
IMO the medications they are giving you are causing hallucinations. Also confusion, because you should know the answer already.

Fixing Thai education is not just a matter of money
Lacessit replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Good teachers make their subject interesting, bad ones make the topic dull. Kids can tell the difference. Your response tells me all I need to know about how good a teacher you were/are. -
Nuclear is not clean. Chernobyl and Fukushima have already proved that. Even a plant which functions as intended generates spent fuel rods and radioactive water. When the plant is decommissioned, the only thing to do is entomb it in concrete. It can't be dismantled as a normal plant would be. It is also more expensive than alternative power sources, due to the expertise and supervision needed to operate a reactor. It's not something one turns over to unskilled labor to run.

How Can I Help My 10 Year Old Thai 'Stepdaughter'?
Lacessit replied to siftasam's topic in Chiang Mai
You may be right. One way around that is to specify in the will the house is not inherited by the daughter until she is an adult, same with any other assets. The executor pays the daughter a monthly allowance out of the assets until she is of age. By then, the daughter can decide for herself. -
IMO it is stupid to even put off a passport renewal for one day, especially when there is a question mark over the last 6 month's validity of a passport in terms of visas etc. What happens to the plan if the normal two weeks blow out to four or five, and the OP is scrambling to get his visa stamps transferred to the new passport at the same time as his extension? Why do people insist on having self-inflicted nightmares, when a little forward planning could avoid all the angst?

Are you a teacher with 20 years experience, or a teacher who has repeated one year's experience 20 times? -
Fixing Thai education is not just a matter of money
Lacessit replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
No, not that simple. If you start teaching science, technology, engineering and math to kids, that's a good start. However, it leaves out critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities in the real world. During my working career, I guarantee I only used about 5-10% of the knowledge and training I received during primary, secondary, and tertiary education. The rest I learned on the various jobs I had. I wouldn't say the Chinese are the perfect model for schooling. If they taught critical thinking and problem-solving in China, the CCP would probably be in the dustbin of history by now. The same applies to the Thai elites, which is why nothing meaningful will be done. -

The Romans had a saying, a healthy mind in a healthy body. No doubt the converse is true as well. -
Trump wins Iowa caucuses, cementing frontrunner status in 2024 race
Lacessit replied to webfact's topic in World News
Every time I have felt masochistic, and watched Trump, he rambles, slurs his speech, slurs people as well, and lies - about everything. Biden might be old, but his speech is clear and cogent. He does "um" a fair bit, so do most people. Physically, Trump is a fat slug. Permit me to doubt Melania lets him anywhere near her. IMO it would be interesting to know how the BMI of his base compares with the American average, the same base that cheered him when he mocked Chris Christie. Gold becomes liquid at 1064 C. -
Netanyahu publicly rejects US push for Palestinian state
Lacessit replied to CharlieH's topic in The War in Israel
A Palestinian state is not going to be established until all the Arab parties can renounce the concept of destroying Israel, including Hamas. IMO Israel would be open to a Palestinian state, IF it had security guarantees from the Palestinians themselves. If someone is trying to kill me, I see no reason not to respond in kind. -
If you don't like it Leave ! Root canal
Lacessit replied to georgegeorgia's topic in Health and Medicine
My health fund pays 50% of what is quoted, which is why I doubled the figure to $5800. In your case, if your dentist quoted me $2900, I would be out of pocket $1450. It doesn't sound as if HCF is particularly generous with its refunds. Why should I apologize, when you post incomplete and misleading information? -
Australian Aged Pension
Lacessit replied to VOICEOVER's topic in Australia & Oceania Topics and Events
I put in a non-lodgment advice 3 years ago, the ATO accepted it without comment. I have not put in a tax return for two years, again no communication. I have only been audited by the ATO once in my entire lifetime, and that was when I was on a six-figure salary back in the eighties. I think you are correct, the ATO has better things to do than chase a minority of pensioners for trifling sums. Besides which, the ATO may have absorbed the Robodebt lesson. Persecuting the poor and vulnerable just because you can has a high cost in terms of credibility and careers.
