looking for home router with mobile data failover connectivity
Woof999 replied to gamb00ler's topic in IT and Computers
A "family member" in my household is in exactly the same position. What I find with True is that my internet connection is actually at least as reliable as the people who my family member talk to in the US / UK / rest of Europe, with them having more dropouts than us. However, True do have a habit of "kicking" the connection, sometimes 4 or 5 times per day. This manifests as a change of IPv4 address and it happens relatively fast, but still causes drop outs for 5 seconds or so, which then automatically re-connect. It's annoying but livable. I assume it is because of the worldwide lack of IPv4 addresses and they do it to ensure all customers can be connected. A router with a mobile backup connection wouldn't help in this situation as, when the connection cuts over to mobile, there would be the same kind of interruption and probably a change of IP address to go with it any way. What we DO have (soon) is a backup internet connection from a separate provider, routed to the house via a separate path. This solves a slightly different problem, but ensures we almost always have a connection available, even though it requires manual intervention to change over. True also have the REALLY annoying habit (and I would think almost illegal) of occasionally rerouting HTTP requests to an advert, almost always their own advert, telling me in Thai about something that they think is important to me but I absolutely don't want to know about. If this happens while I'm browsing a forum then it's no big deal. If it happens while a "family member" is testing a new API then it's a real PITA, as it's not apparent that this is what they've done without debugging. Totally annoying, but it doesn't affect online meetings. If this happened back in the UK then the ISP would get hammered. -
As mentioned above, True run one fibre to the premises which terminates at the router and then all the TV boxes are connected via coaxial cable (which is not the same as UTP Cat5e/6 etc.). RJ45 is not a cable specificaltion, it's an interface (a connector). If I were doing a new build, I'd run structured cabling all over the place, using UTP Cat6 or better. Most data / cabling combos can be run over these cables with some kind of converter at each end. Alternatively, as coax is relatively cheap, I'd run both UTP and coax cable throughout the building. I'd also pre-install several floor and wall boxes in obvious places where a TV etc might sit and run conduit for HDMI, network and power, ideally with power separated, but I'm a little annual on these things. Finally, although wireless is becoming ubiquitous for most things, I ALWAYS use cable where possible, for both security, performance and reliability. Wireless is for my phone.

With the known death toll well into 5 figures I doubt she'll be the only Thai victim. A real tragedy and a reminder of how fragile our existence is. RIP to all.

As mentioned above, you absolutely have to scrub the algae to remove the top protective layer. Thereafter even a scrub with a chlorine tablet will do a good job of removing much of it. Many of the black algae liquids are full of copper, which could also become a problem if the levels get too high.

If I don't have a reentry permit ...
Woof999 replied to Chicksaw's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Travelling through airports is a stressful situation for many people. Some forget their passports. Some forget their wallets, luggage, money, partners... the list goes on. I can easily see how some people might forget to go to the counter to get their extension of stay because it's not a "normal" thing to have to do at an airport and it is not something you MUST do to be able to catch your flight. That is why, when it's possible, I would ALWAYS advise to get your re-entry permit locally, well before you even travel to the airport. Having to go through the whole process of applying for the visa is so much hassle, so why leave it until the last possible moment to get the re-entry permit? It's a last resort, not the best option.- 33 replies

Have Expedia given you the PNR number or booking reference? If so, try the "Manage my booking" or similar link on the airlines' main web page.

Shepton Mallet. Direct flights Bangkok to London and then you can get a bus down to Somerset.

Do I go on a Diet or follow this Expat advice .
Woof999 replied to tomgreen's topic in Health and Medicine
I am by no means a medical expert, so take my response with a pinch of salt (not too much though, salt is bad for you). I think the expats have a point, but there is middle ground too. Drastic changes are hard to stick with long term and losing weight is purely about burning more calories than you consume, so a diet alone is, IMHO, not the way forward. All that aside... you weight almost exactly 12 stones, which, unless you are a dwarf, isn't particularly overweight in my view. I would rather be a little overweight but content with my lifestyle than in peak physical shape while being bored. -
Had EST at Bangkok Hospital Pattaya about 4 years ago. I think the total cost was 9k, which, was less than I initially expected, but pretty much what they told me on arrival. The service was first class.

Did I just enter the twilight zone?

Reminds me of my next door neighbours' condo in Cambodia. His doorbell didn't work for months and he kept missing deliveries. After telling reception at least 20 times that it needed fixing, they finally agreed to come one afternoon. That evening he went back to reception to ask why nobody arrived. They said (no word of a lie) "Yes the man come. He rang your doorbell but you didn't answer."

If I ever went to live back in blighty then I'd definitely install them everywhere. Fantasic idea. I installed the Japanese style washers (front for the ladies too) previously and I still much prefer the bum guns. If you're spraying dirty water about then you're using it wrong.

If you were me - what would you do: Poll
Woof999 replied to Yodarapper's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Personal experience. Generally cars aren't treated particularly well here. The standard of servicing is nothing to write home about. The roads aren't particularly well maintained, leading to early wearing of suspension parts. Several instances of items under warranty suddenly not being under warranty. Given a choice of an item failing and then being fixed / replaced under warranty or not failing in the first place, I'd go with the latter. The relatively small gap between new and used, at least from where I came from, and, if cheap finance is available, a new car is a sensible choice. In other parts of the world I'd almost certainly have a different view. Particularly in the UK. -

2nd hand cars really hold their value here and I personally wouldn't trust one even if it came from a main dealer. If you are in a position to get finance, go for new, but not a brand new model, and then really haggle with them on the interest rate. -

Yep. When I lived there I spent most of the time looking over my shoulder to try and see who they were talking to.

Passports for Thai citizens. Was previously in The Avenue on 2nd Rd, so looks like it's moving a few 100 metres sown the road. -

If he's not had sex for 8 years then I'd tarp up the bedroom beforehand in case it ends up resembling a Dexter crime scene.
