In Spain a lot of (mainly old) people still revere Franco, in Italy it’s Mussolini, in Germany Hitler, in Russia Stalin, the list goes on and on. Apparently ‘strong leaders’ or dictators have a certain appeal to certain people. Unfortunately the trend now seems to be that voters shift to the (far) right and want to be ruled by a dictator. Which means people don’t seem to learn a damned thing from history.

How anyone can call Biden and the Democrats far left (or even radical left) is beyond me. It’s simply fear mongering, one of the very few things the Republicans are very good at: making stuff up, spinning fairy tales and telling people what to be afraid of, and who to blame for that. Does that sound like a sane guy to you? He could have said any number of things. Increase minimum wage. Create more affordable housing for low and middle income households. Make the rich pay their fair share of taxes. Not let corporations and billionaires run the country. Affordable healthcare for all. Focus on renewable energy. Protect the environment. The list goes on. There are so many things that many people in the US desperately need, but De Santis gave them all the finger and decided he just wanted to continue with his culture wars. I’m glad he’ll be history when he gets voted out of office.

Absolutely. Chalerm is probably one of the most corrupt officials Thailand has ever had, and that is saying something, in a country as corrupt as Thailand. His sons are no better, by the way. The scary thing is that Trump himself believes everything he says, that all of this never would have happened if he were president, and that he will immediately end all wars and chaos when he becomes president again. The even scarier thing is that his delusional MAGA base also believes him.

Not only is Vance totally wrong about the UK being or becoming an Islamist country, it’s just completely ridiculous to say something like that. But he’s also totally wrong about the UK becoming the first Islamist country to have nukes: as far as I know, Pakistan is a pretty Islamist country and they have nukes. Don’t take it so literally. Of course he’s not going give it away. Kim is not the kind of person who has ever given anything away for free. He’s going to want stuff in return from Putin: money, technology, cheap oil and gas, maybe some nice supercars, or a couple of Russians virgins. Who knows what he wants? But that he’s going to drive a very hard bargain is certain.

Reminds me of a story that came out in the 1970’s about the then Dutch queen Juliana. It turned out that for decades, she had been systematically underpaying her servants, as she firmly believed that it was ‘an honor’ for them to work for her, so she had every right to pay them less than minimum wage. It was not as if she couldn’t afford to pay them a decent wage, though, since the Dutch royal family was/is quite rich. Just goes to show in what kind of world many of these rich and entitled people live.

But the thing is that Kim is more than willing to give Putin whatever he wants in terms of weaponry. Apparently North Korea has huge stockpiles of ammunition and such, which is just what Putin needs.

The German language has an excellent word for that: ‘hineininterpretieren’. Unfortunately it’s rather untranslatable. It more or less means to read or hear something, and then attach your own interpretation to it. Which is often quite different from what the writer/speaker actually meant.
