Getting used to live in a wheel chair
billd766 replied to OneMoreFarang's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I am not wheelchair bound but I try to plan ahead. I am 79 and I can walk around the house, up to the kitchen and to my neighbours house and back non stop but that a maximum of perhaps 100 metres. Outside of that I use a walking stick for the village and the mall. I also have a Zimmer frame with a seat which I don't use much any more. In July I had a second black out which put me in hospital for a couple of days and the farthest I could walk was to the toilet about 3 metres. I started some UK NHS exercises for the elderly and I now do around 2 to 3 hours a day for 5 days then have a rest day. I have a wonky left kneecap where the cartilage is mostly worn away and my knee sometimes decides to go in a different direction to me. It is also painful when I exercise. So far I am very lucky in the worn out bits of my body, but as I said at the beginning, I try to plan ahead. My wife is my strong left arm and while I can go upstairs and down, on the upslope of a ramp I can go up, but coming down using my stick is not so easy. My wife positions herself in front of me and I use her right shoulder as a support. She is now the driver as both of us are concerned that if I drive the pickup I may black out again and possibly kill someone in an accident. -
Remember, Remember, the 5th of November lyrics Remember, remember, the 5th of November, Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason Why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot. Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, 'twas his intent To blow up the King and the Parliament Three score barrels of powder below Poor old England to overthrow By God's providence he was catch'd With a dark lantern and burning match Holler boys, holler boys, let the bells ring Holler boys, holler boys God save the King! An old nursery rhyme I remember from when I was a little boy.

Why do so many people think that he will be the next PM? After all another Labour PM from decades ago once said; A week is a long time in politics, Usually attributed to British Prime Minister Harold Wilson in the mid-1960s.

Getting used to live in a wheel chair

Thank you for the link. The 2 problems I would have is they are expensive, but they are custom built. I would prefer something that I could use and leave for my wife to use (or what ever she wants to do with it) after I die. The other and more difficult problem for me is that I don't travel well nowadays and my wife has to drive me in the pickup. It is the best part of 500 KM each way -

Thank you I am sure that mine is a genuine Accu-Chek but IMO you can never be 100% certain nowadays. -

Quite possibly but electric scooters are cheaper to run. The also have easier access. and are better for the environment Do you have links to any sites for 3 wheel motorbikes with models and prices. If so put them on the thread. -

It may well be. Instead of complaining, why don't you find a better one. -

My apologies. It is an Accu-Chek Active and came complete with a small carrying pouch, the lancet pen, 20 test strips I think, and 20 test strips. -
I agree with you 100%. "The US is conducting unarmed UAV flights over Gaza, as well as providing advice and assistance to support our Israeli partner as they work on their hostage recovery efforts," the Pentagon's statement on Friday said. The confirmation comes after reporters spotted MQ-9 Reapers, usually operated by American special forces, circling Gaza on Flightradar24, a publicly available flight-tracking website. Unnamed US military officials told the New York Times that the drones were not helping co-ordinate Israeli military action in and around Gaza. Officials told the newspaper that information related to hostage recovery was being passed on to the Israelis. These are not the only remote-controlled American military vehicles operating in the region. There is more information in the link.

I bought an Accu-Chek blood sugar monitor through Lazada in June for 1.130 baht. I use it once a week after an initial 7 day test run to establish an average and it works well. It came with a small bag of "prickers" or lancets and test strips and new ones are available through Lazada as well. -

There is a company in Bangkok that does various types of electric vehicle including one that can carry a wheelchair (look under police and emergency vehicles). Unfortunately I don't have a brochure or price list. http://www.gemcarasia.co.th/en/home -

If it comes to it for me I would like to get a battery trike with hopefully at least a 60 km range which would easily get me/her into the local big village or the Amphur which is about 20 km away and more importantly, back home again. It would be easy to park under the balcony for charging and access. -

What a brilliant piece of kit. I wonder what the range is like, size and weight, plus the dimensions etc, Here is a link to the brochure though it does not seem too informative, https://static1.squarespace.com/static/59535cc978d171b8a62791bd/t/59fac47fc8302592d85b5ec8/1509606547856/leaflet+Offroad-Wheelchair.pdf -

If you have a pickup and enough spare money, would it be possible to get a electric winch built onto the pickup bed with perhaps a SWL of 300 kg or so? An alternative vehicle might be a minibus with the rear row of seats removed.. The biggest problem I have seen for people with a wheelchair is the arrogant self entitled people who park in the spots reserved for disabled people. In the UK my first FIL had an artificial leg from when he was 4 years old. He could drive and when people parked illegally in a disabled spot he would park as close to them as he could and block them in. It may be too dangerous to do that it Thailand though. -

Using your figure the UK pension at GBP 883 comes to GBP 11,479. Under the GBP12,500 tax free allowance, so no tax is payable on the State pension. However the current state pension is The full new State Pension is £203.85 per week. https://www.gov.uk/new-state-pension/what-youll-get#:~:text=The full new State Pension, delay) taking your State Pension As the pension can be paid 4 weekly that equals £815,40 or for 13 payment per year = £10,600.20 so still no tax is payable. If you choose to say that extra money can be earned you would be correct. It is also correct to say that you can get your pension one month and die the next month. At that point we enter the world of whataboutery which is a game that I refuse to play. -

Many years ago in the 1980s my first wife used to work at the original Leonard Cheshire Home near Liss. All of the residents were disabled and many were in electric wheel chairs. For some residents their electric wheelchairs had been adapted to be controlled by a pipe to the mouth. There are several Cheshire homes in Thailand. http://www.siriwattanacheshire.com/EN/about.html -
And now you start to see the problem for Hamas. They have no organised military, no tanks, helicopter gunships and no ground attack aircraft. The only weapons they have in quantity are items like AK47 rifles, rockets, knives and people to defend their shrinking territory and all the Palestinians in Gaza from the IDF. Yet the USA supplies and supports Israel. The rest of the world tries to ignore the conflict. If the IDF kills every man, women and child in Gaza, the West Bank and the Lebanon, there will still be millions more Palestinians left around the world to wreak havoc on Israel. A case of an eye for an rye, a tooth for a tooth and my life for your life. This has been going on since Israel was created, it will carry on for as long as 1 person on each side is still alive, unless people get sick and tired of killing each other, and that has not happened in the world yet.

My good friends wife is getting a 'free" knee replacement on the NHS. She has only been waiting 8 years for it.
