And so the exodus of quality expats begins. This time it's personal

Well, which is it? Is she single? Or is she married to you? Ha. -
And so the exodus of quality expats begins. This time it's personal
BangkokHank replied to Galong's topic in Phuket
Almost exactly the same for me. The only difference is that it was 29 year for me instead of 30. Ha. I went there once - in 1995 - and I HATED it. I vowed never to go back there again, and I haven't. It started with the taxi from the airport, who stopped at an expensive hotel on the way to my destination after trying to convince me that MY hotel was full. I found the people there to be unfriendly (I almost got in a fight with a drunk local), and it was just generally unpleasant. Even if they paid me, I wouldn't go back there again. -
Centrum multivitamins for men watery running nose
BangkokHank replied to george's topic in Health and Medicine
It's the same for me. My nose runs most of the time, but it's especially bad when I eat. I found out recently that this runs in my family. My father suffers from this as well, and he just told me that his father did too. In fact, my grandfather used to joke that his nose runs and his feet smell (rather than his feet running and his nose smelling). Still, I find this very bothersome - and I hope to find a solution to it - a solution that doesn't involve medication. I don't think this is in any way related to vitamins because it happens to me whether I am taking vitamins or not. -
German Man Arrested After Stealing 86,000 Baht From Hotel in Patong

When I read the headline of this article, I thought to myself, "I wonder if this is going to be one of those Germans named Mohammed?" And sure enough, it was. -
PART 2 Thai Wife Being Bullied By Family
BangkokHank replied to thefarangteacher's topic in Marriage and Divorce
Tell them that in your culture, it's normal for the girl's family to pay the dowry - so where's your money? Keep asking them for money - until they start avoiding you.- 187 replies

Mine and others' rights.
BangkokHank replied to Jan1970's topic in Real Estate, Housing, House and Land Ownership
The purpose of the deposit was to have the owner hold the condo for the person making the deposit, rather than renting it out to somebody else. The condo owner did his part. The person making the deposit did not uphold his part of the agreement, whether it was his fault or not. As such, the condo owner has every right to keep the money. He doesn't have to keep it, but he has the right to. If I were him, I would try to rent the condo out to someone else - and then keep the amount of the deposit that I had lost in the transaction with the original depositor. Under no circumstances should the condo owner lose money over the renter's inability to get a visa. -
You said "AsiaNow", but the name of this website is "ASEANNow". (ASEAN is the acronym for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations".

Pita most preferred politician to become Thai PM in NIDA poll
BangkokHank replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Evidence that he is the WEF candidate? He spoke at one of the WEF conferences some time back, so he's definitely known to them - and part of the club. Anyway, there is really nothing to debate. Either he will eventually become Prime Minister, or he won't. If he doesn't, I was wrong. If he does (and I think he will), AND he starts implementing the tyrannical plans of the WEF (as certain other WEF candidates like Trudeau, etc., are doing), then you'll know that I was right. I would be happy to be wrong about this. -
I will be going to Vietnam for the month of January. I would like to be able to use my phone while I'm there for using Grab, internet, etc. I have seen these "virtual" SIM cards for international travel advertised on the internet. How do these things work? Are they a suitable replacement for just getting a local SIM card on arrival at my destination? Thanks in advance for any comments/suggestions.

Pita will eventually be installed as Prime Minister because he is the candidate of the World Economic Forum. -
The plight of commodity investors.
BangkokHank replied to swissie's topic in Jobs, Economy, Banking, Business, Investments
Actually there are ETFs now for individual physical commodities. For example, PHYS is the physical gold ETF; PPLT is physical platinum; CEF is actually a combination of physical gold and physical silver (2/3 gold and 1/3 silver, as I recall); SIVR and PSLV, physical silver; etc. With oil, however, it is not so easy to get an ETF that tracks the oil price because oil is traded on futures markets, which creates the problem that you mentioned regarding carrying costs, contango, etc. I experienced this problem when I thought buying oil was a sure bet when it was trading in the low teens some years ago, but I could not find a way to simply bet on the price movement. The lesson there: Stay away from investing in things like that. -
They want to pay you $191 to take the kill shot? Up to you, but I wouldn't take it for a million dollars. What would I do with the money if I'm dead? Oh, wait, they want YOU to pay? Why should you pay to kill yourself? You can do that for free.

I am a resident here. Just not a "permanent" resident. Who said that I think that the people at the clinic don't know that they charge foreigners more? The receptionist told ME that they practice dual pricing, so of course they are aware of it. You also say to go with the flow and accept the things I cannot change. So first I have to see if I can change it. And if I can't, only then will I accept it - however reluctantly. But if nobody complains, then they certainly won't change.
-
While the receptionist is obviously not responsible for the clinic's pricing policy, a receptionist is generally the first point of interaction between a business and its customers. In a properly run business, he should report to his manager that the policy of charging foreigners more was getting some pushback from foreigners. Then the manager can either change the policy (which they won't do), or just tell him not to tell foreigners that they are paying more (which would be the sensible thing to do). If he hadn't told me, I wouldn't have known. The fact that he told me suggests that didn't think there was anything wrong with charging foreigners more. Maybe he's used to dealing with foreigners like you who prefer to say nothing and pay more. I will visit the mall management tomorrow and point out this dual pricing that is taking place in their mall. They probably won't/can't do anything about it, but they should at least know that one of their biggest tenants has a policy of charging foreigners more.
-
It's also only 70 baht for them. Would you accept it if your supermarket charged you 70 baht extra for being a foreigner? After all, it's just 70 baht - and you're obviously a rich foreigner. I guess you don't understand the concept of principles. In that case, perhaps you could pay the extra 70 baht for me - since it's such a small amount?

A shopping mall near my home in a Bangkok suburb is currently undergoing a complete renovation. While walking around the mall a couple of weeks ago observing the work in progress, I spotted what I thought was a brilliant addition to the mall: A very large, modern looking health clinic. This is such a practical idea, because there are many health-related things that do not require the use of a hospital, such as blood tests, etc. Yesterday I went back to the mall to check if the clinic was open, and it was. So I asked them what it would cost to have a fasting insulin test. The man working at the reception responded with, "We only recently opened, so we don't have our foreigner prices yet." Ha. Not a good start. I countered with, "So you have different prices for foreigners and Thais." He said yes. So I asked, "And the prices for foreigners is lower, right?" I was actually not so surprised when he answered that no, actually foreigners have to pay a little more. When I asked him why, he just mumbled something about "hospital policy". The actual prices were as follows: Price of the test (for foreigners): 420 baht. Plus a 250 baht hospital fee. Price for Thais: 350 baht (plus the hospital fee). Conclusion: The main benefit for me of having this conveniently located clinic just minutes away from my home is that now I don't have to go as far as I used to to get overcharged for medical care. I wonder why they feel the need to charge foreigners more for things? And I just hope that the other shops in the mall, like the supermarket, don't get any ideas from them.
