Actually one of the quaintest parts of all Thailand is the Old City of CM - especially the NE Quadrant... You might also try Visine...

I stayed at a nice little resort in CM - Brit owner - served that Brit b-fast w/beans... except not being a Brit, he didn't give me beans.. I didn't complain - I checked out. He is now out of business... saved himself 5 baht and lost a customer... a real ( 0 )

Finally agree w/you... I went to a ribs place in CM because they had pages of amazing reviews... I was inflated in expectations and deflated w/the reality of the place...

Akha interest me - though I know a lot more Lisu people. My Akha friend and I have a several year friendship with her and it is fascinating to me...

I think poor Thais are happier than most Westerners. They live with less but less stress too. I remember seeing a survey that talked about Norway, Finland etc being the happiest countries - but the cited education levels and medical care - they really didn't talk about happiness. At the time I was in Hua Hin - the Skandis were on vacation walking around stone faced - and the Thai motorcycle taxi drivers who had nothing were laughing and playing with each other - having fun.
