Do you respect the 10 item express checkout limit?

LOL    'Like one needs to be "meticulous" to count to ten.   I'm inclined to just smirk at the dingbats who can't respect the simple thing, but wouldn't be inclined to waste my breath saying anything to them.  Nearly all just skulk off while avoiding eye contact.  One moron awhile back did look at me and say, "I'm in a hurry".  As my two items rolled forward,  I just kept looking at him and didn't say anything as he knuckle-walked toward the door.  (The limit there was actually 15, and he had about twice that much stuff.)  I exchanged glances with the cashier who shook her head, grinning, and said I was polite for not saying anything - "somebody in line usually does".

I've watched them reroute carts at both Makro & Big C back to the other lines if over the limit....

Problem is I often buy a quantity of one particular item, the cashier has the option of scanning one of them and applying a multiplying factor. So is the rule ten different items or just 10 items total?

 

I mean, I am not an American so rules do apply to me.

I read about a guy who had quite a cart full, and went to the '10 items check out.

After he'd half filled the belt with his shopping, the cashier looked him in the eye, and said 'which 10 items are you buying today sir?"

I have and always will stay within the 10 items maximum.
Now how's about the case of going to the regular (any number of items) cashier with only one person ahead of you in the queue and only once you start to unload onto the belt do you realise that the person in front is splitting up the bill into 8 different payments, done in order to apply the discount earmed from the portion of the just paid for. Sometimes takes an additional 10 minutes for the extra faffing around, now that is annoying but as there isn't any rules or restrictions on that in Thailand you just need to grinn and bear it.

In some stores in the US - 

If you have 3 qts milk, 2 loaves of bread, 5 cans of the same soup - they count as 3 items, not 10 items....

 

Others count each individual package as an item....

It isn't so much the odd 11 or 12 items in the "10 item or less" that bugs me, life is too short to worry about a second or two it takes to swipe the additional one or two items. It is the blatant 20 or more (or even whole carts) being pushed into the "10 or less" line. It is also the cutting into the "10 or less" queue when there is an obvious waiting line. Are these people blind or just arrogant?

 

My Thai wife tells me it is usually the older Thais that cut the queue as they were never taught to line up. You can see this non-queuing behavior at almost any counter where they just push to the front and yell out their order (talat Thai market style). I can accept the 80 year old woman who doesn't give a rat's behind and has done it that way for 80 years but the 20 or 30 year old icehole should learn to queue. Any third grader can do it so can you!

I always have a moral dilemma if I have a buy one, get one free that takes my items to above 10. Does that count as one or two?

I have been waiting at the normal checkout with a trolley full and been directed by the staff to the 10 or less checkout, because they were empty.

Also, I am pretty sure some stores have VIP/loyalty cards that give access to fast checkout no matter how many groceries.

Cash registers today should be set up to only handle 10 items, if your over your choice is to go to the back of the line to get the rest or leave with your 10 items.

Thats how I look at it, but I wouldn't abuse the 'system'  a couple pieces over is acceptable, also allowing someone to go in front of me with 1 or 2 in hand is also acceptable.

Yes I can imagine how that would pan out in Bangkok. The workaround would be to pay separately for each 10 items.

My bugbear is people using mobile phones while dealing with any type of cashier/counter.

If we have over 10 items but under 20 and the que's are long, I get the Mrs to get a basket remove 10 items and to get behind me in the 10 items que, and we pay separately, beats waiting in long que's and within our legal rights.

In the UK, they just narrow the passage so a trolley can't get through, That would stop the fat yanks too.

The cashiers should be more proactive on this. Nothing like queuing and then being turned away to make people respect the limit.

However, during my visit to Makro on Sunday, it's very evident that none of the Thais in the 10 item line can count to 10.  Neither can the cashiers.  Myself, my wife, and one guy in front of us seemed to be able to count to 10.

That's probably due to the socio-economic level of most Makro (yourselves excluded) shoppers. 

Any of the Makro's this poster has shopped in have smelled bad and the general demeanor of the shoppers is that they just stepped out of the rice field. 555
