DSI chief defends probe into Panthongtae

Panthongtae Shinawatra

The Anti-Money Laundering Office will next week make clear what action it will take against former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s son, Panthongtae, accused in a money laundering case involving Krungthai Bank in 2008, said Department of Special Investigation chief Pol General Pisit Wongmuang yesterday.

The chief insisted that the DSI was investigating based on the evidence and had no intention to bully anyone. All the documentary evidence had been acquired legally, and the investigation had followed due process, he added.

The Thaksin camp, however, accused the regime of abusing the justice system to suppress political opposition.

Chusak Sirinil, head of Pheu Thai Party’s legal department said the case against Panthongtae should have been dropped since the anti-graft agency had decided not to take action.

Instead, the case was revived after the 2014 coup, he said. A DSI deputy director had been replaced along with the investigation team before the recent decision to take Panthongtae to court, Chusak added.

“Considering all these events, we must question whether this is using legal power for a political purpose,” he said.

Key red-shirt leader Nattawut Saikua made a similar claim, saying the DSI deputy chief was transferred for failing to respond to an order to speed up the investigation. This showed power had been abused to put pressure on the justice system to tackle a political adversary, he said.

Thaksin’s son was accused of involvement in a money-laundering scheme whereby loans from Krungthai bank were allegedly illegally approved. But authorities failed to find sufficient evidence to prosecute him.

Nattawut said that Panthongtae had been cleared but was now being unfairly charged.

“We have to be careful about this. It could add fuel to the flames of the political divide,” he said. “Although nothing suggests that this involves people in the government, it is a point of concern that people might start to have doubts.”

Panthongtae must be a genius. He was barely out of nappies and already he had won the lucrative contract for all advertising on the BTS.  Brilliant, just brilliant. How dare the junta suggest he was involved in corrupt activities.

As an aside, note that one of Oak's business partners is doing a lengthy stretch inside, starting a week or so ago.

Anyone else who had already been cleared would not have to worry about being charged. The name Shinawatra to the Junta though is just too much for them to be able leave alone. To suggest it is not politically motivated is laughable.

Or perhaps the decision not to prosecute was politically motivated. That seems to have happened to Shinawatras on at least 2 occasions that I recall.

The KTB case was clearly a crime, those involved are serving serious time or hiding out o/s. Some of the almost billion baht involved passed through his accounts, his explanation of why should be made public knowledge and its credibility tested in a court.

well, he seems to be very intelligent. And there is no doubt about this with that father and that auntie.

If hes is so intelligent, why did he go into a uni exam with notes in his pocket. Oh that's right, they were 'unrelated' - I'd  bet that ruling cost daddy a small fortune

Very intelligent indeed, just look at the deal he made on Shincorp stocks, pennies on the dollar! By the way, I wonder why nobody is claiming that he is innocent?

Did you miss this: "authorities failed to find sufficient evidence to prosecute him" or "Panthongtae had been cleared but was now being unfairly charged, or even this little nugget, "the DSI deputy chief was transferred for failing to respond to an order to speed up the investigation."

So he's already been cleared, there is insufficient evidence to prosecute and there's pressure from the junta to stitch him up.

Of course any witch-hunt against any member of the Shin clan is ok in your eyes as you are completely obsessed.

Double jeopardy applies after you have been prosecuted. Up until then, a case can be re-opened up until SoL cuts in. given his families habitual crime and their bribery attempts, why shouldn't he be asked to explain his involvement?

Yep so intelligent, he couldn't cope with his studies at Thammasat and withdrew.

Then got caught cheating at Ramkhamhaeng University.

And just like daddy his first 2 business ventures (funded by daddy) failed.

Perhaps he should join senior aunty in rice trading, maybe she's looking for a new fall guy.

And let's not forget the family had no hesitation to throw yl under the bus.

Actually the conract for the MRT advertising had already been awarded to an experienced company but 'someone' had that contract cancelled after it was finalized and somehow oakie's just formed company (like yesterday) with no aligned capability or past experience was then awarded the contract.

The DSI, under the tacit and benevolent guidance of the Shinawatra consortium has been following the procedures and legal steps as prescribed by them.

The DSI, under the tacit and benevolent guidance of the Prayuth consortium has been following the procedures and legal steps as prescribed by them.

All is transparent, above board and legit, as always.

The justice system, during any regime, has been looking the other way in a most transparent and impartial manner, as always.

If I had a hat, I would take it off and applaud all antagonists, protagonists and passivists, who seem to be so well choreographed switching into each others role at the drop of that same hat. Now, If I Had A Hammer...I'd hammer in the morning...

Depends on how you judge success I suppose.

Many Thaivisa readers would consider sitting dribbling incontinently into a Beer Chang in Nakhon Nowhere with Nok the former cashier (she never work bar, kiss brother on the lips type) on their knee, eeking out a pension to be a success, so who are we to judge?

Dear me, you think success is being born into a family of wealthy criminals? As you go out of your away to defend those criminals, without any explanation of why, you may well ask "Who am I to judge?"

He hasn't been cleared. An agency declined to investigate and recommend prosecution whilst his auntie Poo was his dad's latest nominee PM.

No pressure on the agency then?

And now, whilst he's back under investigation the PTP, and one of the biggest crooks from the UDD jump up in defense.

Certainly his political. Go after a Shin top family member and the family owned political party and political pressure group will galvanize into defense.

Whilst the Shins in power they use political pressure to avoid inconvenient investigations. Once out of power they are open to them.

His dad is also avoiding an outstanding court case for the Krungthai Bank fraud too.

Interesting example of hypocrisy.

One of the first to criticize the current government, Junta, PM, Military etc at every opportunity.

But, apparently no one is entitled to judge or criticize your beloved Shins.

Freedom of speech - only if you agree with the comment eh?

Daddy's comment, when asked by a reporter 'never mind, he's just a boy, no problem.

ptp refused to do anything and let him off, is anyone surprised at all seeing he is the son of the head honcho that runs the party, after they were replaced the govt found enough evidence to charge him, could it be that the ptp simply refused to look at it in the first place to p[lease the boss, highly likely considering all the other crap he has been involved in, like father like son as they say

Who is defending him?

I presented the facts as stated in the article.

You are the one that has already condemned him as guilty, as your worrying obsession with the Shin clan continues.

It really is a shame for you that any verdict will immediately be considered as politically motivated regardless of his actual guilt of innocence simply because the military overthrew the elected government in a coup, and is now exerting influence and pressure on the justice system to give the desired results.

A real shame.

"Did you miss this: "authorities failed to find sufficient evidence to prosecute him" or "Panthongtae had been cleared but was now being unfairly charged, or even this little nugget, "the DSI deputy chief was transferred for failing to respond to an order to speed up the investigation."

So that is not defending him, and asking for an explanation of why illicit funds went into his bank a/c is condemning him as guilty? Of course ANY prosecution of a Shinawatra will be labeled politically motivated by their sycophants regardless of their guilt or innocence, because that is all that have to defend them against the evidence of guilt.
