Hi all, I'm buying a car from a different province. I've seen a few posts about that so am reasonably clear on the process. What I'm not so sure about is proof of residence. I'm an AO visa holder with Thai drivers licence. All the materials I've read say I need a certificate of residence from immigration. Will something from my Embassy or the Thai driving licence do?

What's your problem with going to immigration and getting the certificate of residence?

You need the power of attorney + transfer vehicle document from the seller and a copy of his id card (if he is thai), your original passport and a copy of the first and the visa page, a certificate of residence and the blue/green book. with this you go to the DLT, fill out a "request to transfer province form" (probably they do this for you, you just sign it, or your gf helps you). then you have to pay a few thb for some stamps, and another few thb for some fee. Then they take everything, give you back the blue book and a receipt and tell you when you can come back (BKK to Udon was 2 days) to actually transfer the name. When you are back you have to bring the car, they check the chassis and engine number, take the old license plate, you pay some money again and they update the book and give you a new license plate

I did the same thing about a month ago in Phuket with a vehicle from Chaing Mai. I had to get (pay) for a residence cert - they ask you if it is for a vehicle or dl,  so there must be a difference - but what was interesting was that the seller (who was with me) had to first register the car for Phuket, which involved queuing to check the VIN, then when we did the transfer from him to me a couple of days later, we had to queue to have the VIN checked again. No real fashmal, but for some reason best not to go at month end, when there's a huge queue of commercial vehicles waiting to be checked.
