Most resident Farangs don't mind living with the Thai-Family under the same roof.

It's just that there is always an Elephant standing in the room (too big to be ignored): = The Thai-Legal System.

In an unfortunate event, that a Farang gets involved in some "Legal-Proceedings", by the time the Farang has removed the Droppings of the Elefant in the room, he may well realise that he has no more the physical and financial stamina to do battle with the "Thai-Lagal-System" in case that sould become necessary.

The best of it all: Every charming Bar-Lady, every Street Vendor, every Taxi-Driver, every Cop, every Lawyer knows that a Farang seeking "justice" will eventually be "worn-down" by the Thai-Lagal-System. (Emotionally as well as financially).

As the current Thai Governement can see nothig wrong with "Dual-Pricing", why should they worry about "Dual-Justice"?

But maybe the whole thing sould be observed from a viewpoint of Thai-Authorities: If a Farang comes here and invests money, he must know that there is no "legal-certainty" (property or otherwise) in Thailand as compared to European Countries (for example). If a Farang invests in a country, knowing beforehand that there is no "legal-certainty", even a mild tempered Thai-Judge could only comment: "You knew that there are plenty of scams around, with due dilligence you would not have fallen for it, so it's entirely your own fault, what do you want us to do about it?". AND: "The fact that you have bought your GF  17 i-phones last month and all have been stolen in the meantime, belongs not in our juristiction."

All perfectly reflecting Thai-Logic: If the Farang would not have come here, he would not be confronted with Thai-Problems, and we would not be confronted with the problems of a Farang in Thailand.

So, regardless if you see the Elephant in your room or not, the Elephant is there (the Thai-Legal-System).
Feed him regularely, make believe that you have accepted him as some sort of oversized pet.

By observing this rule and keeping a low profile, long-term Farangs fare quite well.

Having been there, done that, got the t shirt, IMO most farangs that have a problem with the Thai family brought it on themselves. The warning signs are there, but we choose to ignore them, perhaps because we want to believe that OUR beloved isn't like all the others.

 

However, in some cases, it is possible that they really were fooled by a vicious and cunning family that were determined from the start to take a naïve farang for everything they could get, but IMO such evil cunning is not the norm.

 

To anyone starting out, just don't live with the family, and don't make yourself at risk of catastrophe. If they really are genuinely nice people, you can move in with them in a few years time, when it is more evident what they are really like.

I know that we are in that situation because we are so desperate for a lover's comfort, but ask yourself if you would do the same thing back home with a western woman.

Having everyone talk about you "behind your back" whilst you are in the same room must be more than a little disconcerning, especially if you tend towards paranoia.

I see everyday that the thai cultural mindset, not by all, is the elephant in the room. Of what ive heard and seen from fellow foreigners, who have a conflict with a thai, it is indeed best to try hard and live under the radar. But as life is, not always possible. One needs some selfrespect !

You see an Elephant in the room, maybe they see a Bull in a china shop; as with quantum physics, perspective changes reality.
