Im looking to get insurance for a 1999 year car. Its imported from Japan with a LOT of customisations to engine etc. IM not totally clear but it seems to have been imported as a Lancer and converted to (and beyond) Evo specs (including conversion to AWD). Its not totally clear it may have been imported as an Evo. Even if its original Evo (unlikely) its been heavily modified beyond that.

Do I have any chance to get fully comp or full third party insurance for it? Or I'm stuck with government insurance?

I don't want to go ahead and pay for private insurance only to find its not covered if I have a crash.

Do I need to find some kind of specialist insurance company?

You probably won't get first class insurance because of the age of the car, but 2nd class + should be possible as long as the engine numbers match ok in the blue book. Worth getting insurance from a broker with a shop who can take some pic's of the car to send to the under-writer so everything is clear rather than direct to a big company or online, at least that is what me and some other Thai friends who run modified cars do. If the first broker says no just try another until you find one who can offer coverage you are happy with.

Regarding the car itself, if it is an original EVO (1999 would make it an EVO 4 ?) or one rebuilt from a halfcut from Japan into a Thai spec Lancer CK, the blue book should show what the original engine was, and if the first Engine was not a 4G63 Turbo you have a non original EVO. Nothing wrong with this if it was done properly, there are a few highly skilled and knowledgeable garages in BKK that do these conversions very well. Check out BMS pro dyno:

the owner Khun Butt speaks very good English and knows your model of car inside out.
