  • You would have to turn yourself into immigration and then be sent to the IDC. You would then have to wait for a the judge to make a decision on the amount the fine will be. It could be more 3000 baht.

Call me crazy, but I can't quite figure out why anyone in their right mind would ever travel thousands of miles away from their home to a foreign country on a different continent -- and make that trip

  • People with flight and valid flight documents leaving through an airport in the normal way (paying overstay fines and being blacklisted as appropriate) usually have no other problem. As long as you ca

How do other countries deal with overstayers in the neighbourhood? Or is Thailand the harshest of them all knowing full how forbidding the IDC is.

As I live in Thailand i wouldnt have a clue Google it. A quick google search informs you Cambodia $5 a day going up to $6 after so many days.

Laos seems to be around $3to $7.

Myanmar is about $3 daily and a $3 handling fee.

None seem to be inclined to custody for overstayers.

In India as far as I know overstayers can be jailed for up to five years and are also liable to a fine. Jail conditions are comparable to those in the IDC but things are visibly changing fast. I dont think you can pay bail and avoid the jail term. Are there places in Thailand where foreigners even with valid visas are not allowed to visit? I dont mean private property of course.

Not as a general rule. In times of tension along a border, foreigners may be prevented from visiting areas near the conflict areas, but I do not think there have been cases of that recently.
