Fleeing driver beaten by crowd after truck kills woman

PATTAYA: -- A pickup truck driver, who police said appeared to be drunk, was assaulted by passers-by while trying to escape after his vehicle allegedly hit a motorcycle and ran over a woman pillion rider in Pattaya late on Sunday night.

Pornthep Jai-ngam, 31, was stopped and badly beaten by chasing passers-by at a curve on Pattaya Road at about 20 minutes after midnight on Monday. The spot was about two kilometres away from the scene of the accident.

 

Police said Aim-orn Thongpan, 43, was killed after Pornthep’s pickup crushed her head. Another woman, Natchuree Khammuang, 25, was injured and rushed to Bang Lamung hospital.

 

Eyewitness Pilanee Deethua, 28, told police that she saw the speeding truck hit the motorcycle driven by Natchuree, hurling it several metres away. Aim-orn fell off on the bike in the middle of the road and was crushed by the pickup.

 

The pickup then sped off but the alleged driver was caught by other people who had seen the accident.

Another half story,did the Police finally get involved,or was

he just given a beating and allowed on his way,some of these

stories,you have to be a clairvoyant ,and fill in the empty reporting

Sad, but without RBT's in Thailand showing their presence daily and having appropriate fines, jail terms, many more will die.

 

I hope the driver gets serious jail time, is suspended from driving or riding for life, and not given a 500 baht fine and sent to the temple.

and that is why I'd never drive on rural roads without my wife. Too many idiots driving out onto the road without looking, to be safe.

At least with her present she could explain it wasn't my fault.

Go Thailand No. 1 or 2 No matter what constitutes that aim to reach that goal in sport or death. You will always be up there in road deaths, Sad to say no trophies but just dead people and countless of heart broken family members, friends and so on in their thousands every year. Plus thousands crippled and permanently on welfare. The crematorium must be overworked? Pull your finger out or should I say get the cops policing the roads to pull their finger out of their fat asses and actually be proactive on the roads..

Hate to agree with you, but I suspect you might be right... 

 

That said, she'd have been extremely badly injured / maimed even with a helmet. 

 

In reality these incidents happen because they can. It really is that simple, people don't care for the consequences of their actions because the consequences of their actions are insignificant.

 

This was manslaughter. 

 

Once again ineffective policing & sentences, the lack of preventative measures are the root cause leading up to a devastating incident.

I am sure the police will have got involved very rapidly if he has money.  Of course as we have seen he is then allowed to appeal, delay things for years, leave the country etc

I drive twice a week in & out of Pattaya at night.  In a 50 kms round trip I see about forty traffic violations.  I never see the police who hibernate during the hours of darkness unless they have a platoon of soldiers to give them backbone when arresting four under-age drinkers.

vigilantes have no place in civilised society however when the public at large know the police force are too unprofessional, lazy and corrupt to serve and protect them it is hardly surprising it occurs. in a civilised society the mob would be prosecuted.

Yes, a risk of being severely beaten or worse, even if we're blameless. Forget concepts of not leaving the scene, like in the West.

slightly off topic last sunday afternoon saw a thai male come out of 7/11 opp friendship with an open large bottle of leo get into the driving seat of a pickup he downed a good slug and drove off any wonder why these accidents happen, police are only interested in the less lethal motorbikes

I remember at work once discussing another accident with some of my Thai co-workers where "the driver fled the scene." I asked why do these people that cause accidents always flee the scene? They all just said something to the effect of "OH...he was just trying to save face." They all seemed to think it was a perfectly reasonable reaction to such a horrific event. Shocked by their attitude about losing or saving face I said "wouldn't it be better that they FACE up to the responsibility for what they have just done?" Judging from the blank stares the concept didn't seem to sink in. I suppose I'll never truly understand the whole 'FACE' thing with Asians.
