Transport Chiang Rai Airport Secures 5.7 Billion Baht for New Terminal

Chiang Rai’s Mae Fah Luang Airport is set for a major expansion after the Ministry of Transport and Airports of Thailand (AoT) approved a 5.7 billion baht project to build a new passenger terminal, aiming to increase capacity to six million travellers per year by 2032. Currently, the airport handles around 1.9 million passengers annually. The new terminal, which has already entered the conceptual design phase following the appointment of consultants, will accommodate up to five million domestic and one million international passengers each year. Airport Director, Captain Dr Somchanok Thiamthiebrat, described the project as a bold investment in Chiang Rai’s future. “Pushing for six million passengers within seven years is buying the future for Mae Fah Luang Airport and the province. If we fail, the airport will struggle, but we must move forward for Chiang Rai’s long-term growth,” he said, emphasising that success would depend on collaboration between government agencies, the private sector, local authorities, chambers of commerce and educational institutions. Alongside the terminal expansion, Mae Fah Luang Airport is also pressing ahead with plans to establish a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) centre on 50 of its 753 rai of land. The facility, which has already passed environmental impact assessments, is expected to support growing regional demand, particularly from China, forecast to become the world’s largest aviation market by 2030. “Thailand is the most strategically placed country for aircraft maintenance due to its proximity to China, and Chiang Rai has the potential to host such a hub,” Dr Somchanok added. He noted that the development would not only serve as a repair centre but could evolve into a full-scale aerospace industry centre, following Singapore’s model, with complete aircraft assembly and servicing capabilities. Construction of the MRO centre is due to begin soon with piling works, reinforcing the government’s ambition to transform Chiang Rai into an “Air Metropolis” and a leading aviation hub for the Greater Mekong region. A letter addressed to the prime minister highlights an urgent need for action on vaping due to its rising popularity amongst children and teens. A startling report shows that the number of e-cigarette users aged 15 and above has skyrocketed from 78,752 in 2021 to over 900,000 in 2024, with 25% of them exclusively using these devices. The role of online sales, enticing product designs, flavoured options, and youth-targeted marketing in this trend has drawn concerns. Commissioner Wasan Paileeklee expressed concern about the hazards of nicotine, which can negatively affect brain development, focus, learning abilities, and behaviour, potentially resulting in depression or suicidal thoughts. Reports of e-cigarette-related lung issues, requiring severe medical intervention for some teens, have further alarmed the public. The NHRC has also expressed unease over alleged connections between some appointed parliamentary advisers and the tobacco industry. This, they claim, could breach international commitments like the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), intended to shield health policies from such influences, reported the Bangkok Post. People believe that Iceland's unclear e-cigarette laws undermine its commitments under important international treaties. The commission's recommendations to the prime minister include boosting public awareness, revising existing tobacco laws to cover e-cigarettes, enhancing legal enforcement, and ensuring independent policymaking free from tobacco industry manipulation. What’s your longest time without seeing another Farang?
Dear Folks, Here is a curious Topic, if you will. Yet, this question is one which is mentioned often among YouTubers in Thailand. We often hear YouTubers reporting on Thailand who bemoan the fact that they have not seen another Farang for…blah-blah..days. But, what about you? Do you hold the record on TV, or in the Farang Pub (which, sadly, no longer exists), for the most consecutive days without seeing another Farang? Personally, I think I once went about a year without seeing another Farang, or maybe 14 months. However, my record number of days was not recorded in Thailand. Now that I think about it, I once went for almost two years without seeing another person that looked like me. Only Asians did I see, until one Farang popped up, after about 800 days. So, what about you? What is the greatest amount of time, number of days or years, that you have gone without seeing another Farang? This also brings to mind the great book: The Good Earth Naturally, there have been many accounts of missionaries who have lived and worked in China without seeing another Farang, for years. I do not regard myself as one of those who could exist for decades without proper healthcare provided by a fellow Farang. 45 years ago, doing without seeing a fellow Farang, while in Asia, for many months, was not strange. This was the norm. And, it was not a hardship. For example, there were benefits such as never needing to celebrate the 4th of July, like they do back home in the UK. And, back then, we never celebrated Christmas, either. Do you think you hold the record for the greatest number of days, going without seeing another Farang? What is your record?
