Bangkok Named Most Popular City For International Tourists In 2017

Alexandra Talty , CONTRIBUTOR

For the second year in a row, Bangkok is ready to be the world's top tourism destination.

The Thai capital is predicted to host nearly 20.2 million international tourists in 2017, according to Mastercard's annual list of most-traveled to cities. Released to coincide with World Tourism Day, the 2017 Global Destination Cities Index looks at visitor volume and spend at the largest 132 cities in the world.

Trailing the Asian metropolis is London, which took the second spot last year as well. Clocking in at third is Paris, followed by Dubai, Singapore and New York. "Tourism within cities – like Bangkok, London, Dubai, Tokyo – is vital to economic growth.

Mystified. How does mastercard work that out, by what standards?? Also, how come almost every retail outlet, not just including bars, are all saying that business has been down for the last 3 years, which coincides with another major offputting event for tourists.

Probably another survey around people that never have left their country.

Only given a choice of nearby cities and a few far away.

Why aren't the survey statistics, summary, analysis, geographical overview and synopsis never included ??? No, only publish the result !!!

Mastercard did this survey?
Why wasn't I asked to join? I am using Mastercard for over 35 years. Visa too...

The result of my own survey.

Planet Earth is the best planet to live on... (same, same but little bit different)

I honestly have no issue with this. I can see BKK been the most popular city in the world.

From everything i've seen in BKK  and from people i speak to.

I never hear anyone saying hey are going to New York or Los Angeles. It's always Thailand and onto Australia or other Asian countries.

Both airports are always rammed full and when i do a bit of plane spotting, i've never seen more large planes landing at any other airport.

No problem with this report and cannot see why Mastercard would make up the figures.

It must be more years in a row that the TAT has talked it up, but failed to back it up.

'No problem with this report and cannot see why Mastercard would make up the figures.' That would depend how Mastercard framed the figures, and how LoS and TAT interpreted them.

Many people come to BKK because it is an affordable destination, when compared to New York city or Los Angles.   BKK is the number one destination for Mainland Chinese due to price.  For Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore Chinese also.

Maybe from Asia but from the rest of the world you are forgetting the cost of the flight around £550 economy from Europe and 13 hours = 1.7 days in transit before the trip starts. TAT count everything as tourists including those in transit who never set foot outside the transit area, add the migrants who went home and came back again plus the visa runs and you have these nice looking figures they put out every few weeks.

Mind you TAT must be good as the rest of the country cannot keep the computer systems running but TAT always has the figures, Another miracle I expect.

One days the lies will catch up with them and it will be a financial meltdown.

Your are right; I forget those who were just transiting at BKK airport.
