A Polish man who is accused of blowing up a Bangkok Bank ATM earlier this month and escaping with about Bt300,000 in cash was yesterday taken for a re-enactment.

However, Pol Maj-General Nantachart Supamongkong, a city police commander, said the re-enactment was just part of the investigation as police would compare evidence they had collected with what the suspect, Gracjan Pawel Stanisewski, 38, had told police during an interrogation.

Stanisewski led police to the ATM at the entrance of Tesco Lotus’s Krungthep Kreeta branch in Prawet district and a petrol station on Srinakarinvirote Road.

At the store, the suspect showed police where he had parked his motorcycle before pouring petrol from the vehicle into the ATM machine. He then allegedly released gas into the ATM before setting fire to the petrol, resulting in an explosion that blew open the machine.

Stanisewski reportedly told police that he had ridden his motorcycle to Soi Krungthep Kreeta 15/1, where he threw his bag and other items into a pond to hide the evidence. He then filled the motorbike’s tank at a petrol station on Srinakarin Road.

Metropolitan police chief Pol Lt-General Sanit Mahatavorn said the suspect had volunteered to perform the re-enactment and he had known about the pond because he formerly had fished there.

Nantachart told reporters that police still believed that Stanisewski had planned to commit similar crimes in the future, judging from evidence police found in his apartment where he was arrested.

Although the suspect claimed the ATM robbery was his first, police are seeking information from Interpol regarding the similar use of explosives to rob ATMs in other countries.

Metropolitan police chief Pol Lt-General Sanit Mahatavorn said police believed Stanisewski acted alone.

He was arrested in raid at his apartment after a survey of CCTV footage led police to him.

Where is the Pole ?

Interesting.  Used petrol and some other flammable gas to help make a contained explosion inside the ATM.   As a former stress test calculation person, makes me a bit curious on what over pressures the ATM unit could withstand. I am sure proof or burst testing was not part of the original design requirements

He was late for work in a gogo

I watched some of the re-enactment on television this morning. When he led the media and police to the pond where he dumped the bag, one of the searching questions put to him (in English) was, "did you catch any fish?".
