Space Weather Message Code: ALTK07
Serial Number: 111
Issue Time: 2017 Sep 28 0805 UTC

ALERT: Geomagnetic K-index of 7
Threshold Reached: 2017 Sep 28 0805 UTC
Synoptic Period: 0600-0900 UTC

Active Warning: Yes
NOAA Scale: G3 - Strong

NOAA Space Weather Scale descriptions can be found at
www.swpc.noaa.gov/noaa-scales-explanation

Potential Impacts: Area of impact primarily poleward of 50 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude.
Induced Currents - Power system voltage irregularities possible, false alarms may be triggered on some protection devices.
Spacecraft - Systems may experience surface charging; increased drag on low Earth-orbit satellites and orientation problems may occur.
Navigation - Intermittent satellite navigation (GPS) problems, including loss-of-lock and increased range error may occur.
Radio - HF (high frequency) radio may be intermittent.
Aurora - Aurora may be seen as low as Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon.

Ah, so that's why the ThaiVisa forum site is so slow at the moment. I knew there had to be a good reason.

Where do you derive that it has an impact on the internet?

Only severe power outages or the like could affect the internet.

The backbone of the internet runs in fiber optic cables that are heavily shielded. Continents are connected by undersea fiber optic cables.

Telecommunications and tv signals go over satellite.

Internet is wired.

The boats I work on must have real long wires to shore that I never knew about then !!

Strange because I could have sworn our internet comes via satellite ?

Why not discuss it publicly?

We could all probably learn something, worth learning but as far as I can tell, the majority of the world is connected by physical lines (copper and increasingly fibre optic), rather than satellite?

Boats is an exception... The  lions share % of the worlds internet infrastructure has nothing to do with satellites or boats...

Sure, ships and everyone on expedition far away from civilization can use internet by satellite (telephone) for a horrendous price at meager data rates.

Also it seems that airplanes with internet access go through satellites.

Not so expensive as far as I know (never used).

The rest is (submarine) cables, cables, cables...
