A two-hour downpour caused severe flooding in Nonthaburi’s Pakkred district and Samut Prakan’s Muang district on Monday.

In Nonthaburi, Muang Thong Thani Housing Estate’s Bond Street was under about 30cm of water, causing traffic jams in the early afternoon. The outbound lane of Chaeng Wattana Road near the Muang Thong Thani intersection was also under 15cm of water. Officials took two hours to drain the flooding.

In Samut Prakan, several roads of Muang district were submerged at 10am. Sri Nakarin Road’s Sri Thepa, Baring and Lasalle intersections, Sukhunvit Road’s Phuchao Samingprai intersection and a section of Theparak Road in front of the Color Living Hotel, were all under about 30cm of water, resulting in traffic jams.

Samrong Nua traffic police inspector Pol Lt Colonel Sathit Samanparp led a 20-strong police-soldier team to control traffic and urge motorists to avoid the flooded areas, while municipality workers drained floodwater.

Meanwhile, the Royal Irrigation Department warned that the northern runoff through Chai Nat’s Chao Phraya Dam would be torrential at 2,076-2,240 cubic metres per second on October 8 to 11, with the peak flow at 2,240 cubic metres expected on October 9.

The department also said the amount of water contained at middle- and large-sized dams nationwide as of October 1 was at 56.131 billion cubic metres or about 75 per cent of the dams’ combined capacity.

Forest runoff, which poured into the 110-tier Wang Kaew Waterfall in Lampang’s Wang Nua district, prompted Doi Luang National Park officials to alert related agencies and downstream residents to brace for possible flash floods in the morning.
