A combined force of military, police and administrative officials launched a crackdown against illegally-operating hostels on Ko Phangan in Surat Thani province late on Friday night (Oct 6).

The crackdown was prompted by complaints from residents that more than 150 hostels have been illegally opened on the resort island district.  They are also accused of being used as places for drug users.

The first targets raided were the Cat in Space and Echo Beach Bar in Tambon Ban Tai.  They were found to have been opened without a permit.

KPG is what it is, let them be. If the argument was for safety issues which are not even enforced on multi billion companies such as Hilton ok but its local jealousy that Somchai 3 is getting more customers than Somchai 1 and 2

First, on many beaches were built expensive and ugly concrete  houses. Many owners have hoped on the well paying tourists as a target group, but this group visit KP relatively little.
The main tourists who visit KP are still young backpackers who prefer to spend their budgets for booze and party, and save on the accommodation. There is a lot of envy and disgrace in the game.

Illegally operated businesses ( in the eyes of Thai law vs western expectations or standards) should be shut down until they obtain the correct permits.... easy really, and not to hard to understand

harder to understand is why I can't get a beer on a beach bed under an umbrella at nai harn.

I sympathise with this one but....

Beach beds and umbrellas are illegal on beaches in Thailand (unless the area is licenced) and do the people selling the beer have a licence to sell it?
