One killed, two injured in double road accidents in Roi Et

By The Nation

A motorist was killed in a fire and his passenger was injured when their car crashed into a lorry that was making a u-turn in Roi Et's Mueang district early on Friday.

The first accident prompted another lorry to slow down, and a pickup crashed into its rear.

Police said the accident happened at 2.45am on a road in the Mueang district.

The charred body of the car driver, Singchai (whose surname has not been released), was removed from behind the wheel. His friend, Anupong Chanapahm 21, who suffered a broken left arm, managed to climb out of a window before the car caught fire.

Anupong told police he and Singchai were returning home from a pub.

The lorry driver, Sawien Boonthee, 33, initially fled the scene but later returned to meet police.

He said he was not familiar with the area so he drove past his destination and was trying to make a u-turn when the crash occurred.

In the second accident not far from the first spot, Kwan Khamyen, 40, was severely injured when his pickup truck hit a lorry in front of him.

The second lorry truck driver, Rachan Akkharit, 34, told police that he had slowed down after spotting the accident ahead and the pickup then ran into him.

very nice of him after watching someone burn to a crisp !

Lorry should have full length lights on their side, with new LED technology it would be a very cheap improvement on the vehicle law.

Or everyone could drive at a speed safe enough to see what is ahead of them and react in time to avoid an accident. Like in much of the rest of the world. And especially at 2.45am when you've been drinking.

Anyway, there might well already be a law about lights along the side of large lorries, but you and I and everyone else knows that the police will not enforce it as they don't consider enforcing the law part of their job.

I myself almost ran into a lorry some two years ago.

Break lights and indicators like a glowworm.

And that was in daylight, blinded by sun too.

The usual: car inspection and police checks are a bad joke.

returning from the PUB at 2.45am.another responsible barman serving drink to drivers.
