Biometric devices to be used to detect foreign criminals

The Immigration Police Bureau will soon use biometric devices to detect foreign criminals travelling to Thailand in the guise of tourists for criminal activities in Bangkok and other parts of the country, according to IPB acting commissioner Pol Lt Gen Suthipong Wongpin.

Pol Lt Gen Suthipong said immigration police currently scan foreign criminals on the black list entering Thailand by checking their fingerprints.

The current system to detect criminals is not effective.  Some criminals went back to their home countries and returned under new names, he said.

This sounds odd, as I've never once had my fingerprints scanned when entering Thailand, I wonder how Immigration pick which arriving-passengers might be criminals, and therefore need to be scanned ?  :whistling:

It's a bit of a chicken-and-egg question.

11 years ago, on the 28th September 2006, the headline read-

Police to introduce fingerprint scanning at Suvarnabhumi

And the article stated-

Quote

SUVARNABHUMI: -- The Immigration Bureau plans to install fingerprint identification equipment at Suvarnabhumi Airport within the next two months.

All talk as usual.

They should be more worried about domestic criminals. Surely this will mean that the queues at the airport are going to be even worse then they already are.

Why are the Thai authorities surprised foreign people go home and change their names? Thais do it at the drop of a hat, for good luck.

not their focus; all thais see is the sensationalist foreign devils; and, of course, due to the rampant xenophobia, that is what they Want To Believe

You mean to get out I suppose.

Just fingerprint every tourist who arrives, give them the Little p book on what you can do, say and see and of course tell them about no smoking on the beach and you cannot sunbath there either 3 days a week. Then everything will be hunky-dory.

Except tourists will drop off and TAT will have to start counting every passenger jet that takes off anywhere in the world to get their magic tourist figures

I wonder if the radar detectors and biometric devices will be purchased from the bomb detector company?

My fingerprints are in my passport. When Thai immigration scans my passport at the airport they have them.

I agree.

Just do like Singapore where we all have to give a fingerprint.

I'm wondering if they switched their fingerprints at the same time they changed their names???

Perhaps they should consider using biometric devices to detect corrupt & criminal politicians and police officers.

If someone has a criminal record in Thailand they will have been finger-printed as part of the arrest process.  Being finger-printed on entering the country at Immigration, they system will presumably compare the traveller's finger-prints with those in the database - and if there is a match with someone who has a criminal record in Thailand and the crime was serious enough that they were blacklisted for it then the Immigration Officer will get an alert about this and the traveller will be refused entry.  This system will help Immigration prevent those who have been blacklisted returning to Thailand under a new name, as some people are said to have done.

This begs two questions.

The first is whether all foreigners entering Thailand will be finger-printed every time they enter.  If that's the case, expect Immigration queues to get longer, perhaps a lot longer!  (Or will they just perform finger print checks in a special room of those they suspect might not be who they say they are?)

The second question is what this means for those who have been blacklisted in the past but since returned to Thailand after changing their name.  If they are finger-printed when entering the country next, they will probably (finally) get picked up and removed.

Maybe the focus is "we have enough of our own criminals without adding more"

I'm sure the Thai Army would be glad to sell Thai Immigration some slightly used GT200 units that could easily be adapted to point out foreign criminals.
